Happy Thursday... it has been a week!

Good day, all. I finally got a chance to stop by and catch up a bit. It has been a crazy week for me!

I took Monday off work to go to my niece's courthouse wedding... or so I thought it was just to go to her courthouse wedding. About 2 weeks beforehand, she sent out a blast text to probably her entire phonebook announcing that she and her fiance were going to have a civil ceremony sometime between 4/14 and 4/17. I asked if she would like family to attend or if they just were sending a FYI. She said family was welcome to attend, and that her fiance's mother was flying in from California to attend. All sounds good.

I arranged to take Monday off work, as did my mom... and so we piled in Momma's minivan along with my brother (father of the bride), and his 3 other daughters... and headed the 2.5 hours west of my home to the small town where the bride and groom live. About 45 minutes out from their home, we get a text message informing us that there is a "crisis" going on. It seems they didn't bother to check the marriage laws in Kansas and had not filed for the marriage license, which has a 3 day waiting period associated to it.   The groom's mother flew in specifically for the wedding, and has to return on Wednesday... and she is very upset about all this.

Long story short, to resolve the severe unhappiness and quell the shouting match, my brother and I called around several places and I was finally able to secure a justice of the peace who would agree to a same day marriage... in Hastings, Nebraska. This is only a scant 3.5 hour drive from where we were in the middle of nowhere. We had about 5 hrs and 45 minutes to get there, get the marriage license, and get to the ceremony. Driving at a rate of 90-95 MPH most of the way, we actually even made it there in time to get dinner (if you want to call it that) between getting the marriage license and actually having the ceremony.

Note: If you should ever find yourself in Hastings, Nebraska and you are hungry... go anywhere else to get something to eat. Seriously. The "fine dining" steakhouse is only open for dinner and is located under a train tressle, next to a storage locker facility. The really nice Italian place "in the mall that really isn't a mall" really doesn't exist. Instead, there is what is supposedly a Mexican restaurant... that should probably just shut down because if you think a margarita is made with lime Kool-Aid, you have no business serving anything to anyone.

Tuesday was just catch-up from being off on Monday. Yesterday I worked from home and waited for the gutter company to show up. They finally did, so my house finally has gutters again. Today has been blissfully quiet for the most part. We'll see what tomorrow has to offer.

Mz... sorry for your loss.

Web, good luck with the taxes.

Fuzzy, I'm glad the tax season is officially over for you.

Everybody... have a great rest of the day.

You were in Hastings? That's less than 2 hrs from me. If you had the time, you should have come on up the 20 miles to Grand Island. Plenty of good food options there . . . and that's only 1.5 hours from me.

Oh yeah, taxes. That reminds me. I just called and they say our return DID get filed on time but now they are making copies, creating binders, etc and they will call us when our's is done.

In retrospect, I probably should have checked with the Grand Island courthouse to see if they did weddings. I think it might actually be closer to Junction City, KS than Hastings was. We didn't hang out long after the wedding. It was at 5:15PM. We were back on the road out of town by 6PM, for the 5.5 hour drive back to Olathe to drop me off. Heckuva lot of driving in a day!

I sure would have let you know that we were going to be there, had I known we were going to be there more than about 20 minutes before we got in the car to go there.

I'm in Grand Island fairly often. Grand Island is where we get on the interstate when we head to points West. We were there in January for Mrs Web's bank Christmas party.

It's been a few years since I've been to Hastings, though. There is a big sports center in Hastings that we used to take the Sr High youth group each year for a "lock in".

There is also a regional eye specialist in Hastings. Mrs Web had to go there a few years ago to have a photo taken of a "mole" in her eye. Her local eye doc wanted a photo of it so he could have a reference to compare with to make sure it wasn't growing over time. My dad also goes to that eye doctor a few times a year for his eye problems.

Sounds like it was a whirlwind trip for you all.

Indeed it was. The plan was originally to just drive to Junction City for the courthouse event. Not so much. Both Missouri and Nebraska allow you to marry the same day you get your marriage license, so it had to be one or the other for the sake of the groom's mother. The only courthouse in Missouri that would agree to do it only does marriages on Fridays... not a good option for peace in the family. We had made several phone calls trying to get the deal done... the guy in Hastings was just the first to agree. He was a little stunned when he asked me afterwards why I picked Hastings of all places.

Fixing problems... that's what I do. Never said the solutions are always practical or convenient, but they do work (usually).

I think I'm exhausted just reading all about your trip M.

There are only eight MI local partnership returns that I need to complete for 4/30 left in my tax season. Well, I'm down to seven since I finished Detroit. I have spent yesterday and today also finishing up my month/quarter end stuff and cleaning items off my desk. My desk is in much better shape. I still need to rearrange files and get them into offsite storage, but that may have to wait until the end of May. I have an audit scheduled for the first week in May and have not pulled the detail files that the auditor needs. I only have summary files. I should find that "things to do after 4/15" list. I have things to add to it.

I'm going to try to finish the draft of the Flint tax return before I go home. Off I go.

I did not know there wasn't a waiting period in Nebraska now. There was a waiting period when we got married, but that was about 16,000 years ago.

In a sane world the waiting period for a marriage license would be about ten years.

Not really... Thursday was a slow day. I was just bored so I thought I'd share with my friends some of the mayhem in my world.

Or possibly would not be legal to obtain!
