Just found out a County Sheriff was shot this morning about a mile and a half from me. I don't know the details but there have been police cars all over and a couple of helicopters flying around. The suspect shot the sheriff and took off. The good news is the sheriff is going to be ok not a life threatening wound. The kicker is he was shot in a very nice upscale neighborhood. One of those places where stuff like that isn't supposed to happen.
Ok I found out it's not the neighborhood I thought it was. But you still don't expect a shooting to happen around here.
We had a woman police officer shot dead over here a few weeks back, It wasn't that close to where I live but still shocking none the less, We don't have as many guns over here so when this kind of thing happens it's massive news, It seems more and more frequent lately that guns are being used in crimes in the UK.
The schools around the area are on lock down. When my wife dropped off my daughter there were a couple of police cars near the entrance and she said it looked like a S.W.A.T. team was staging in the parking lot. The officer was shot in the shoulder and the suspect fled in a black Toyota Camry I guess the officer returned fire and the car should have several bullet holes in it. The guy works at the Crane Naval Facility....so look out Molly and Mz he could be heading your way.
Deputy shot in Johnson County By Vic Ryckaert vic.ryckaert@indystar.com December 7, 2005
A suspect in the shooting of a Johnson County sheriff’s deputy was chased by other officers and found dead in his car this morning, police said. Officers at the scene said David Voght, 38, shot himself, but a sheriff’s spokesman did not immediately confirm that account. Deputy Steve Edwards was wounded while responding to a domestic disturbance at Voght’s home at about 5 a.m., said the spokesman, Lt. Jerry Pickett of the sheriff’s department.
Edwards was said to be in good condition at Wishard Hospital in Indianapolis.
Voght, a former Fort Wayne police officer, worked as a civilian employee at the Crane Naval Surface Warfare Center in southern Indiana, Pickett said.
Police spoke by cell phone with the wanted man, who said he would not be captured alive, Pickett said. Voght was thought to be wearing body armor and possibly armed with a .223-caliber, military-style rifle and a semi-automatic handgun.
“We’re trying to convince him to turn himself in,” Pickett said.
Voght was later stopped near Taylorsville in Bartholomew County at about 7:30 and was found dead, Pickett said. Police on the scene told their dispatchers that the wound was self-inflicted.
Deputies were initially called to a domestic disturbance at Voght’s home in the Wakefield subdivision near Indiana 37 and West Smith Valley Road in Greenwood, Pickett said. Officers saw Voght in the area and tried to stop his car. He fired at those officers, hit Edwards, and fled, Pickett said.
Working in a bank, my wife always has that "what if?" in the back of her mind. Especially after what happened a couple years ago . . .
There is a town about our size 200 miles from us that one of their banks got robbed a couple years ago. The most scarey thing is that it wasn't what you might expect from a "typical" bank robery. It was not a "get on the floor and no one gets hurt" kind of thing. There were three or four guys that walked into the bank and just started shooting. Several people were killed and more seriously injured. The guys were caught and if I remember they will all spend life in prision except for the leader who is to become a State lightening rod. It was just totally scarey how they went in and didn't give those people a chance. They died just for working there.
Another life was lost later because a state trooper had stopped these guys on the highway a few hours before the robbery. He had a bad feeling about them but let them go as what he stopped them for was not that serious. He felt guilty and killed himself about a week later leaving a wife and kids behind.
I realize that 200 miles is a long way from home in a big metro area, but there are not many banks between where this happened and us. My wife still thinks about that now and then.
It just amazes me that anyone could be cold enough to put any amount of money ahead of another human's life.
Last Christmas, one of my dad's employees got murdered in her own home. They think it was an ex-boyfriend or something like that, but it's still scary. Although she lived on the opposite side of town than he does, my dad doesn't live in the best neighborhood, so I worry about him.
