It's just a gecko!

Sorry guys, I'm finding a lot of stories today that are stiking me as funny or just plain odd today.

PORT JERVIS, N.Y. - A 19-year-old man was behind bars Tuesday after allegedly biting the head off a gecko as part of a bet.

Derrick Ford was being held in the Orange County Jail after being charged with felony animal cruelty, police said.

Ford was at a friend's home Sunday when someone bet him $10 that he wouldn't bite the head off a gecko, the Times Herald-Record of Middletown reported.

Though Ford won the bet, it wasn't long before police showed up and placed him under arrest, the newspaper said.

Ford, who also was charged with violating parole, is now awaiting further court action.

I agree, just a gecko. I used to keep them as pets. But I do not think this fits as a crime or a parole violation. I wonder who was the idiot who called the police? I bet they got a big chuckle at the station!

need more info on this one , was it a childs pet ? were  kids in the room  ? was he drunk ?

my view -  theres something wrong with someone who would kill a harmless living object just for the sake of it .

station house _ desk sgt. : what happened to him ?

arresting officer (me ) : he bit the head off a gecko.

desk sgt : thats a lot of broken teeth , are geckos that hard to bite ?

arresting officer (me ) : he tried to bite my nightstick too....

also - thought research showed that people who hurt animals also tend to hurt people .

I think he got off scott free and went on to sell 10 million albums because he was certified messed-up and insane which makes for great record sales from those who want to self-identify with their personal heros.

My point is that although a bit freakish, he sold albums on more than image alone. And that people don't usually go to jail for biting the head off of an animal!

Come to think if it,

what if someone stepped on an ant on purpose,

but it was Leg-less Timmy's pet ant- 6-leg Jimmy

- Would the stepper meet the same fate as our

gecko-taster here?

Here's what I wonder:  If biting the head off the gecko was only part of the bet, what the heck was the rest of it?   I'm against killing any living thing solely for the purpose of gratuitous entertainment. People who do that kind of thing are just sick and wrong. I'm no fan of arachnids and reptiles, but I wouldn't hurt one just for a bet.

Thats the thing that gets mea about this story, recently on british tv we have had a sereis called "Im a celebrity.... get me out of here", basically they send abot 10 celebs to live in the Australian jungle for a couple of weeks and every day they have to do these trials to win food for the group and one of trials involves the celebrity eating all sorts of live bugs and other nasty things, shouldd't they be getting arrested too!

I agree that it's wrong, but is it worth being jailed over?

In and of itself, this is not an offense that should probably be punishable with jail time unless the particular gecko was someone's beloved pet.  I'd think the surrounding circumstances would have a lot to do with it though... if this hooplehead was doing something else along with it, then animal cruelty should probably be tagged on there.

Here's the in betweens that I'm assuming for this story:

Betting someone to bite the head off of a gecko, and then that person actually doing it, probably also involved drugs or alcohol. But, it's rare for drugs to be involved and the media not mention it.

So, if there's alcohol, and at least 2 people, I'm assuming it was probably a party. This guy is on probation anyway, so I would guess there's at least one person at this party who doesn't like this guy and knows he's on probation.

So, this person is probably watching this guy during the whole party looking for something to turn in him for to get him in trouble.

And the most they could get him on was biting the head off of a gecko.

You are probably right, Molly.  It is a sad and petty form of vengance usually reserved for jilted girlfriends/boyfriends.  Wonder what this guy was on probation for anyway?  Probably something equally bone-headed.
