Let's count it down pounds!!!!

I've read where many of us have said we are going to try to lose weight and get in better shape this year. Yeah for us!

I remember many months ago a thread started (I think it was Mz) about having a cyber support group here as we work on this together. Several of us said we were up for it, but it never went anywhere.

Shall we try again?

If so, what would be the intent here on the forum? A weekly personal weigh in and then post your lb. loss? Should we work up a spread sheet where you send your actual results to one of us to track % lbs lost? Not to make it a "competition" but more of a "motivation" to have a good number on Monday morning? Do we want to post our actual weights to track? I personally don't have an issue with that, but some might.

So, I'm asking. I'm all for it. Who is truly serious about this, and what do we want to do as a group? I've never actually been part of a group like this so I don't have very good ideas.

What do ya think?

I'm on the way out the door to take the dog for a walk . . . be back in about 45 min.

I think that's how I could contribute too- people are always talking about food, diets, excericise at work or at the gym- some good ideas- what is working for some, what isn't etc.

I guess in my instance, its not weight I want to lose, I just want to tone up. But I like this idea!

Great idea Web! I'm not really going for weight loss as much, but I'm hoping I will lose some as I start to work out. I know I can stand to lose the weight, but my main goal is to just start feeling better, and I know I need to more than diet to acheive that. But I have found out in the past, if I have an obligation to more than myself, I'm more motivated.

In other groups I've been in, we've weighed in, and we've stated our goals. I'd rather not have everyone know my start weight, but reporting pounds lost and goals would be good.

My first goal is to drink 1 8 oz glass of water per glass of non-water beverage, and to visit the YMCA to check it out this week.

Back from my walk. I'm pretty wet, it's 36° and light rain. I went a little over 2 miles in about 35 minutes.

I'm pretty sure that most of us will think this is a good idea, but I'm wondering where to go with the public part here. I guess I think it is a great idea to support each other, but I'm just wondering if we should have any kind of "formal" routine to measure our results, or if we just want to "chat" and share ideas.

I really dunno. Myself, I will need to track my own results to keep motivated. If I don't have measurable progress to where I can see the benefits, it will be hard for me to keep going. I can do that on my own though, if that is not something we want to do here in public.

Web, what a fantastic idea.  I love it and can't wait to join in on it.  A freeze frame biggest loser.

Great motivation.

Web, just don't weigh yourself wet!

I would like to keep track too. How about a page that's just linked to from this thread of just a spreadsheet with name, goal, week number, and pounds lost that week? And if someone doesn't want to publicly post theirs, they don't have to.

I don't need to weigh wet . . . I have plenty on my own.

I certainly wouldn't want it to be turned into a competition other than the struggle within ourselves. Posting our progress would be a great motivator though. Personally, I would like to shoot for at least a pound a week. When I was fighting diverticulitis a year ago, I lost 15 lbs in about two months (since regained) so I know I can do it if I just quit eating.

Thats a very good idea Mz. Each person could set their own goal and post that if they wanted to. I certainly need to lose weight, but more importantly is the overall health issue and getting my cholesterol numbers down. I'm confident that working toward one goal will automatically help the other.

Shall we start tomorrow with our own personal weigh ins? Then during this week set our goals and plan for a weekly report on Mondays ??

I would be happy to participate. This is something that I need to work on here. I have been thinking about it for a while and of course, I keep putting it off. Some motivation is the fact that I have to be in a wedding at the end of September. That is plenty of time to shape up and look nice.

I lost 20 of the 25 extra pounds that I had gained in 2001-2 by going on the e-coli poisoning quick diet. You don't eat for a week. thank you, tainted pork product. The restaurant has since closed.. But I don't recommend this as a diet plan.

I always thought I had a high metabolism. Couldn't gain a pound no matter how hard I tried, for 15 yrs. Nothing like gettin that first "sit down" job with catered hot breakfast and hittin the big 3-0 to change that fallacy in thinking!

I gained 10 pounds back after I got better, and have watched the weight ever since. I don't know if the motivation is so much about health as it is as to I am not blowing another $400 on a new business wardrobe because I got big again.  Both are good motivators.

I think I did pretty well today:
I walked 2.6 miles in about 35 minutes.
I ate a Subway sandwich (no cheese) while the rest of the family had McDonalds.

I worked in the basement and got it cleaned up and picked up a little (a job by itself) so I could get to the weight bench. My plan is to try to get a good walk in every day and slowly add a little weight training in 2-3 days a week.

This morning, I was 204lbs. I'll not weigh again until Next Monday. I can vary 2-3 pounds from one day to the next so I'll not worry too much even about a weekly check. Hopefully after a month, I'll be able to see progress.

Just one lb. a week seems like it will take forever to get progress, but at that pace, I'd be under 180 by July. I could live with that.

Ok, did my 29 minute aerobic workout this am. Had a banana and yogurt is waiting. Also on my first cup of water. I really need to get back to my healthy lifestyle. It just feels better all over- attitude, muscles and bones and energy level!

Do not diet- change your whole way of eating and being.

We can help each other!

Well, since Mz and I are going with a friend, it looks like we won't be able tocheck out the Y until Thursday. And I just realized, I don't have any tennis shoes!!! So I've got a gift certificate that I'm ordering them with, but I'm not quite sure what I'm going to do for shoes until then...

I probably will swim. But, I'm going there for the first time to check it out, so I was hoping to check the equipment out too. I've got some tennis shoes that hurt my feet, so I'll probably wear those until my other shoes come in.

I'm starting now to feel nervous about this, so I wanted to mention something, just in case.

Please remember that this is supposed to be motivational and uplifting. This can be a difficult subject for some people. Many of us know that we are overweight and need to live a better lifestyle, but we don't always want other people to tell us that. It's important that each person go at their own pace. So while everyone has everyone else's best interests in mind, be careful with giving advice. For example, if I'm being told that I'm not doing something right when I didn't ask for the advice in the first place, I'm more likely to just give up.

I don't know how to word this right. (And Ruby, I'm not referring to your post above, thanks for the idea!) Am I making any sense here?

Molly...there is never a shortage of advice on any topic, especially this one. The secret it to find what works for each of us. So when someone gives an opinion or advice...think of it as ala carte....take what you can use and dont worry about the rest.

Weighing in requires that I spend a few moments communing with my scale.  We are not currently on speaking terms. I am, however, back on my diet. Today is day 2 back on the wagon.

Here's my advice from my previous (and very successful) diet experience... TAKE VITAMINS.  Find a good multi-vitamin and take it every day.

Like I expected, my message totally did not come out right. Let's try this again:

Weight is a very sensitive issue. Before giving advice, please double check it to make sure you're not offending someone. When we're talking about stuff like this, it's easier to offend someone when you don't mean to.

Try not to be offended by anything tough. If by chance we do offend you, we never meant to!

This should be good. I will paste my Denise Austin tips everyday! She has great advice.

PS. I do not think you can do this wrong. The only wrong thing is not trying. Which I have been guilty of for a couple of months now!

Here is what I got today from LHJ:

Get Over It!

If enjoying all the goodies at last night's party left you feeling anything but jolly, don't despair. One too many cups of high-octane eggnog or that second piece of pie may have given you a headache or an upset stomach, but it needn't sabotage your weight-loss or fitness goals, or plunge you into a cycle of overeating.

The morning-after effects of overeating can range from the merely annoying (think tight waistbands) to serious tummy troubles. Here, how to recover when you indulged in . . .

Too much fat

Eating rich desserts, such as cheesecake or ice cream, can overload your system and cause nausea and diarrhea -- especially if you've been on a low-fat diet, reports Lisa Young, Ph.D., R.D., adjunct assistant professor in the department of nutrition and food studies at New York University, in New York City. At the very least, you'll wake up feeling fatigued and full.

The solution: Drink lots of fluids, ideally water, to aid digestion. Eat something light and low-fat, such as fruit and cereal with skim milk. If you're queasy, toast with honey can help settle your stomach. If you have diarrhea, stick with bland foods and steer clear of fruits and vegetables.

Avoid: Starving yourself, which can worsen nausea and -- once you get hungry again -- kick-start the cycle of overeating.

Too much salt

If you couldn't keep your hand out of the potato-chip bowl, you're probably feeling thirsty and bloated, says Leslie Bonci, R.D., director of the sports-medicine nutrition program at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.

The solution: "Consume lots of liquids early in the day -- to help flush out the fluids that salt retains," says Bonci. Good choices: water and chamomile tea, which is a natural diuretic.

Avoid: Salty fluids, such as tomato juice and high-sodium soups, spicy foods (the spices often contain added salt) and soda.

Too Many Carbs; Too Much Alcohol

Too many carbs

Whether you consumed an entire bag of M&M's or had three helpings of stuffing, the worst effects -- a sugar rush and/or an overwhelming urge to snooze -- will likely have passed by morning. (While fat takes at least eight hours to be broken down, the body breaks down carbohydrates within about four hours.) However, you may still feel groggy and sluggish, and -- because carbs cause the body to hold onto fluid -- parched, swollen, even stiff.

The solution: Hydrate with water and decaffeinated beverages such as herb tea. Eat light all day -- have some yogurt or cottage cheese for breakfast rather than a bagel. Be sure to include lean protein such as white-meat skinless chicken or turkey -- which will satisfy your hunger without overloading your system.

Avoid: Starting the day with sweets such as doughnuts or a Danish. Choose foods with more savory flavors instead to give your body a break, suggests Bonci.

Too much alcohol

Plain and simple, alcohol leaves you dehydrated.

The solution: Drink diluted fruit juice (half water, half juice) to replace lost fluids. Bland foods such as rice, dry toast or cereal, chicken noodle soup and bananas are easy for a queasy stomach to digest (bananas also supply the B vitamins that alcohol saps out of your body).

Avoid: Acetaminophen, which, according to Franca Alphin, R.D., clinical associate in the department of community and family medicine at Duke University Student Health Services, weighs heavily on your liver -- the same organ that's processing the alcohol from the night before. To treat a hangover, take ibuprofen instead. Caffeinated beverages may keep you alert, but will cause further dehydration

Spent 30 minutes with Denise Austin this am. She is so motivating! I wish I could look like her at 36 and she is almost 50! Oh, but I am sooo sore! Every muscle she worked hurts! It will pass soon I hope!

Here was my advice from Denise today:

  • Give exercise a fair chance. Tell yourself you'll do it for three weeks before you decide whether or not you like it. By then, you'll start to notice how great you feel, and you won't want to stop!
  • Schedule workouts into your day. Have a supportive person "check in" with you to make sure you're keeping your appointments!
  • Join a class. You'll not only exercise on a regular basis, you'll make new friends who are also committed to fitness!
  • If you're the kind of person who won't let something you pay for go to waste, consider a gym membership or a few sessions with a personal trainer. Use your frugal nature as motivation to get your money's worth!
  • Explore your options. You'll be a lot more likely to exercise if you enjoy it. Hate running? Don't torture yourself! Try something else — perhaps yoga or aerobics!

Hey Ruby, what's your goal? Sorry, I don't think I saw it before.

My goals for this week is to increase my water intake and research local fitness centers. Next week I should have the money to join the one I'm interested in, and then my goal is to go at least 3 times a week.
