Cat calls 911??

I don't know that I believe this, but...

Cat Calls 911 to Help Owner, Police Say
By Associated Press

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Police aren't sure how else to explain it. But when an officer walked into an apartment Thursday night to answer a 911 call, an orange-and-tan striped cat was lying by a telephone on the living room floor. The cat's owner, Gary Rosheisen, was on the ground near his bed having fallen out of his wheelchair.

Rosheisen said his cat, Tommy, must have hit the right buttons to call 911.

"I know it sounds kind of weird," Officer Patrick Daugherty said, unsuccessfully searching for some other explanation.

Rosheisen said he couldn't get up because of pain from osteoporosis and ministrokes that disrupt his balance. He also wasn't wearing his medical-alert necklace and couldn't reach a cord above his pillow that alerts paramedics that he needs help.

Daugherty said police received a 911 call from Rosheisen's apartment, but there was no one on the phone. Police called back to make sure everything was OK, and when no one answered, they decided to check things out.

That's when Daugherty found Tommy next to the phone.

Rosheisen got the cat three years ago to help lower his blood pressure. He tried to train him to call 911, unsure if the training ever stuck.

The phone in the living room is always on the floor, and there are 12 small buttons _ including a speed dial for 911 right above the button for the speaker phone.

"He's my hero," Rosheisen said.

I like the part -" the police decided to check it out" .  WTF ? You only answer 911 calls after a group discussion and then a vote ?

I thought a 911 hang up was an automatic check it out!

It should be!

I wonder if the other cat is trained to brew coffee and the other one balances the check book?

That is pretty cool, but I'd think maybe one of those "Life Alert" thingies would be a bit more reliable. I can't imagine any of my cats doing anything more helpful than laying on me.

My cat would probably survive off my carcus until neighbors came to investigate the smell of my decomposing body.

Hehehehe... I have 5 cats. I'd probably be gone before I ever got to be stinky.

That whole subject reminds me of the movie I watched over the weekend... Grizzly Man.  All about Timothy Treadwell and his girlfriend who were eaten by bears.  After watching that, I'd have to say I think he got what he asked for.  Dude was a hooplehead.

We rented the DVD.  I truly thought I would at least feel sorry for the guy, but I don't. I sort of feel sorry for the girl who died with him, but then again she knew that she should have walked away.

Is it worth renting?

Well, I guess that depends on your point of view.  I'm an animal person, so I thought I would truly feel sympathetic toward this guy.  It is largely an interview with some of his friends and family members, intermixed with some of his own footage wherein just about everyone says "I think that he really wanted to die that way."  I would have to say that if you have any respect for what Timothy Treadwell theoretically tried to do, then don't rent it.  If the behavioral patterns of manic-depressives interests you, then go for it.  It is sort of fascinating to watch his mental decline which to me was fairly obvious as the movie goes along.

Thanks, I just might get it. I have read several stories about him and a few other loons like him. It fascinates me- both the research and the stupidity! I mean why bother trying?

I think you will get more out of the stupidity aspect... at least I did.  They didn't seem to make much of the research he did.  They do show him speaking to some children at a school at one point, and they mention several times that he felt he was "protecting" the bears, but otherwise not so much.  I was glad I waited for the DVD instead of trying to see it at a theater.

There are 2 DVDs in the case.  The first one has the movie and some interactive thing about the making of the movie.  The second disk has a couple other video segments on it, but I can't remember what they are about specifically.
