The cover of your local paper?

Does yours look like mine? They claimed all 12 miners were alive. Gosh that is just so sad. I am not sure if I would have wanted to be the one who survived. I am guessing he watched the rest die.

I watched CNN until about 10:30 when they were confirmed alive. This morning I heard it on the radio just as I was coming into work they were confirmed dead but one. Our newspaper has them as alive too!

WHAT!!!!

What the hell happened?!?!?!

I went to bed at 1 AM thinking 12 were alive and 1 was dead. Although the news kept commenting that it was odd they had yet to see any of the minors.

I thought the same thing. We were all told that there were 12 alive. What a shock this morning to find that someone got it backwards. That is too bad. I really thought they were going to come out okay.

I think thats terrible. raise desperate hopes and them smash them again. Who would have leaked false information like that???

I don't think it was a matter of leaked bad information, but more of a misunderstanding. It could have been they were yelling down the hole and heard wrong from the one guy still alive. Still, it is tough to hear they are okay only to find out hours later that they didn't survive.

I know that is a horrible emotional roller coaster.

Actually, they're reporting (although clearly THAT doesn't mean anything) that someone overheard a cell phone conversation by an emergency worker in which he said they had found the twelve minors and that they were sending the first in for medical treatment.

The person who overheard it appears to have been a mine-foreman who then assumed it meant they were all alive and started spreading the word.

They said the company and people close to the situation knew 20 minutes after the info started spreading that it was wrong, but they waited 3 hours until they recovered all the bodies to make sure they didn't just confuse the situation more.

Like I said, I'm surprised the news ran with such an unsubstantiated story, because apparantly no OFFICIAL person said they were alive. And the news on FOX kept saying how odd it was that they had yet to see a single person brought out.

Just saw the headlines on a printed local paper at lunch. MINERS FOUND ALIVE.

I can't imagine the pain of being told they were alive, and then dead.

miner's daughter cries

I didn't look at the KC Star, but I know it said they were alive.  My hubby informed me of that first thing this morning, but much like so many others I went to sleep after hearing they were alive. It was such a busy morning, I didn't check the headlines and didn't learn the truth until I left for lunch.

See.  My living in oblivion pays off.  I didn't even know there was a problem with any miners.

there is something to be said about that, pambo. Sometimes its enough to deal with the world that is directly in your face than to have a continual news-fed onslaught on other's plight and tradgedys, sad and stirring as they are...

When I feel like I am being spread too thin, I ignore the news for a few days. bad news will always be there. it sort of brings me back to myself and the immediacy around me to let all that go every once in awhile.

Honestly, I live quite happily not knowing what's going on OUT THERE.  It's scary & sad & I don't want to hear the same thing over & over.  It's not that I don't care.  It's that I care too much.

I have turned off the news in my home too. I listen in the am to the weather- why I do not know, but I can't start my say that way.

This particular story will be made ten thousand times worse because of the media. I know that sounds heartless, but it is true. They will beat it into the ground until they draw blood or lawyers!

I'm right there with you Pambo. Kinda funny for a newcaster, huh? But unless it's one of my top 4 headlines on Yahoo and it happens to catch my attention enough to look at, or if it's listed under odd, unusual, or weird news (Newz), I probably don't know about it. There's also the off chance I'll catch it on the radio on the 10 minute drive to work, if I have the radio on.

For example, my car radio is set to 88.3, which usually doesn't get any stations, so I can set my MP3 player to it. Well, when I got off work today, I happened to have a station coming in there. They proceeded to tell a little bit about each miner that died, personal stuff like "he liked the outdoors and camping." There was no way I was listening to that, and I shut it off. I deal with enough sadness and stress during my day, I don't need it from anywhere else.

that really is true isn't it- to care TOO much. So much that what you can do in terms of good in your immediate life might be compromised. Really, a story like this tells me to love better the ones I love in my life. That's about all I can do, and yet I know its enough. Its what I can actually do.

I only recently started watching the news again.  Generally just the national stuff, nothing local. The only reason I watch the national news is to get an idea of what is going on politically in the country.  I'm not anyone's political activist, but I want to know who is doing what in advance of the next election cycle.

Otherwise, I'm of the 'no news is good news' ilk... I'd prefer to spend my time worrying about my own.
