Sometimes you have to bend the rules, sheesh!

CANBERRA (Reuters) - One of the world's top shopping mall owners has paid A$50,000 ($38,000) to the Muscular Dystrophy Association of Australia after mall wheelchairs were taken from two brothers with the disease, forcing one to crawl to his car.

The other brother had to be carried to the car by his sister.

A security guard at a Westfield shopping center in the southern city of Melbourne stopped the brothers when they attempted to take the wheelchairs, which belonged to the shopping mall, outside.

"Westfield apologizes for the circumstances which led to the incident and deeply regrets the indignity suffered by the brothers," the company, which is the world's top shopping mall owner by market value, said in a statement.

You can understand where the misunderstanding could've started but as soon as the Mall employee realized the mistake it should have been recitified IMMEDIATELY!  I hope the brothers get something out of the whole ordeal - like some new wheelchairs or something!

It's unconscionable that the mall security staff would do this.  Would it really have hurt them to follow these people to their vehicle and then taken the chairs back?  I just can't imagine such a thing.  How cruel.

I am still wondering how the guys were able to get into the mall. Would they have not been in the same exact position?

I understand the guards were probably just doing their jobs, but there should have been some leeway or lend the guys a hand.

I'm guessing their sister stopped at the door , went in to get wheelchairs , then after brothers were in chairs , parked the car , Why couldn't they do the same in reverse? .

It is a stupid policy thou , if someone can get into the mall with without the mall's chair , why would they need it ?

It is sad thou , that with a mall full of people , no one helped either brother.

Which makes this story a little fishy , I can't picture Aussies being like that.

I am with you fuzzy.  How did they get them in the first place and why didn't they return them in kind.

I would guess that particular security guard wasn't there when they got there, parked, and the sister went and took the wheelchairs out to the car for them.

And still, to make someone crawl to their car, no matter how they got in, is still cruel.
