Do you still have your tonsils?

I got mine out in the 5th grade- what a horrible experience. That was my only surgery besides a c-section with the boy.

How bout you?

Still have mine. I'm afraid a doctor might suggest I get them out someday though, because I get a lot of sore throats.

The only surgery I've ever had was to have my wisdom teeth out. Other than that, I've had a couple "in office procedures" that weren't very fun, but I won't go into that detail.

Oh yeah, I forgot about both those- had all fours impacted wisdom teeth removed when I was 16 or 17 and also had a procedure done that was not so pleasant!

I got lucky, I only had 2 wisdom teeth! But they were both impacted. Had them out when I was 17. They put me under intraveniously, and I slept for 2 days afterward!

I still have my tonsils. I have my wisdom teeth, but I need to go have the top two removed. I have had five surgeries in my life. Two on my hand, two c-sections and one to make sure I never have to have another c-section again. I can't bend my ring finger because of an accident when I was 6. That's what the hand surgeries were for. I will have to go under the knife again soon to have scar tissue removed. My family builds it up quickly. Wow, great genetic lottery there.

have my tonsils....back when I was 5 and they were swollen to the size of golf-balls the doctor says "oh no.....we treat this with antibiotics, we rarely pull them out anymore".

So now when I have a bout of strep throat, and they swell to the size of golf-balls , the doctor says "why didn't you have these pulled out when you were a kid!?!?"

Still have my tonsils.

Still have all four wisdom teeth although they are all under the surface and pointing forward rather than up. The dentist said they may be fine that way forever unless they start to go bad being under the skin like that.

I had two surgeries a little over a year ago. The first was to remove about 12" of my colon due to diverticulitis. I came out of that with a temporary ileostomy that I had for 7 weeks. After that, another surgery to reverse the ileostomy and put my belly back together, but I was VERY happy to have that one and get back to "normal". Both incisions took 38 staples to close everything back up.

I have my tonsils.

I only had two wisdom teeth and they came out when I was 25.

That was the same year I blew out my knee (torn minicus) and had surgery.

And my father died that year too. Oh, wait, that doesn't belong int his thread.

Nonetheless, along with a few other things, it was a bad year.

Hey Molly, JR and JD - One of the girls here at work finally had to have hers taken out - just last week - and she is at least 38. They say it is a more dangerous procedure when you are an adult. Please be cautious of yours.

Ruby, I was not sick until I got sick. What I mean, is that I had no idea there was a problem until about 9:00pm on night in that July. I started feeling like I had gas pains and just needed to go to the bathroom except I couldn't go and the pains wouldn't let up. It just kept getting worse and worse until I could not stand it any more. I couldn't even stand up straight. I drove myself to the ER about 2:00am and they started running tests.

I was in the hospital four days on I.V. anitbiotics to get over the infection. They said it might happen again, it might not. In August the same thing happened again. Another 4 days in the hospital. I had to stay on antibiotics another four weeks until I could get healed up enough to have surgery.

The surgeon that did the procedure said he'd never seen diverticulitis that bad in someone my age. It is usually an older person's disease.

My wife says now I'm just a semicolon.

Web!

What the hell is diverticulitis?

Is this ANOTHER potential thing for me to worry about? I'm turning into a bit of a hypocondriac now. I'm always sure I got something.

I hear you fuzzy- I heard that too- much more bleeding to happen when an adult has their tonsils out.

Diverticulitis is when your colon developes small "pockets" that protrude outside of it. These little pockets then catch "stuff" and can get infected. If they get bad enough, they can burst and then you have infection and bad "stuff" in your belly which you then get REALLY sick.

The Dr. said that I had a couple that had burst but my body was trying to fix them by growing new colon wall over the holes. He said he'd never seen that before.

95% of the time, it only happens in the Sigmoid part of the colon so they just remove that part so you'll likely never have much trouble with that again. It is a slow recovery process because a lot of stuff gets moved around in your belly when that is done.

About the only thing you can do to help prevent it is to eat plenty of fiber in your diet. Basically keep your stool "soft" and you'll have less chance of it being an issue for you. I'm not surprised that I had troubles as I would typically go 2, 3, or sometimes 4 days with no B.M. I know . . . TMI.

The Ileostomy is about the same thing as a colostomy only higher on your small intestine rather than your colon.

Basically, they cut a hole in my belly about 1.5" round and pulled my small intestine to where it was sticking outside. Then, they cut it open so it can drain there. That meant my entire colon was not in use that whole time. They make whats called "colostomy bags" that stick to your belly and fit around the protruding intestine so the "stuff" will drain into the bag so you can lead a somewhat normal life. It's not that bad of a deal, your intestine has no feeling so it doesn't hurt or anything after you get over the surgery itself.

So, eat lots of fiber and you will not likely have a problem.

Hey Web, that was almost TMI But interesting none the less.

My father had pockets in his colon and the doctors told him he shouldn't eat anything with seeds because it can easily get caught and infected.

I also read a story that you are at a much lower risk of colon cancer and other problems if you have regular BM's.

I'm fortunate in that if I eat something in the morning I'm pretty much moving it out by the end of the day (since we're sharing too much information I figured what the hell, I'd share too).

My MOTHER on the other hand has gone as much as TEN DAYS without a B.M.!!!! We were just discussing this recently because she was going for a colonostopy. She mentioned that she regularly goes 3 - 5 days and sometimes as long as 10.

I can not imagine that!

Yup, your dad had the same thing then. The pockets are called Diverticuli and when they get infected, its Diverticulitis. There was a new recent study and they determined that the "no nuts" and "no seeds" thing doesn't make any difference.

10 days? Wow!

if you have kids buy orthidontia insurance.  holy cow.  I have no dental or medical so I all out of pocket.  My oldest is in braces and has had two oral surguries because she has a small mouth but very large teeth, so they took out eight teeth, and scraped out the pockets so she won't get the wisdom teeth-

I still have my tonsils, wife and daughter don't.

I used to work with a guy who once suffered diverticulitis.  He is vehimently opposed to eating anything that contains nuts or seeds. He said he was taking no chances on ever having to live through that again.
