computer Q's n A's

was thinking to self , -  Self , there seems to be a few members ( O.K. theres one )who lack in basic computer skills and would do more stuff if they knew how but can't cause they don't know how. It's not that their dumb , they just don't know how. How to remedy this I wondered aloud .

  I know how ! start a  q n a  thread , and to keep anyone from going thru the " I wanna ask , but I don't wanna be 1st " syndrome , I'll start.

lets say theres a neat site I want to share , how do I post a link to it ?

dave go ahead and type the www.whatever.com address here-

it SHOULD automatically be a link to the site.

If that doesn't happen, type the address

and then select the whole thing with your curser and then click the little chain link thing up near the right hand side of yer note and that will link it. see the * note.

aw crap it doesn't show up (obviously) unless you are actually typing a message- but its in the same toolbar row where you can select your font size and stuff- just further on down the line a bit.

aw in that case, as long as the pics are posted online you can right button click on the pic, select copy and then come on over here to your message, right click, and then paste it in here.

I belives if you want the pic to link to the site, you can select the pic and then click the chain thing and it should link to the site from whence it came.

Dave, with it minimized, I think it will quit showing you as logged in after a while. I think its about six minutes. If you bring it back up, it will show you who else is logged in, but you will "time out" after a while of no activity.

Each time you click on something on the forum, it registers that as an activity and puts your name first in line at the bottom of the page. It doesn't matter where the window is, the longer you go without clicking on anything in the forum, the farther down the list your name goes until it drops off entirely if you don't click something in 7 minutes (I think it's 7, but Web may be right, it may be 6). But if you refresh the page, it's activity, and your name will come back up to the front. And even if you close the window entirely, your name will still be up for 6-7 minutes until it expires off the list.

I don't know how well I explained that...Clear as mud?

Okay I've had it with spam! The last time I opened my email was Sunday. When I opened it yesterday I had 113 new messages that were almost all spam including spoofs trying to tell my that I added new email addresses to accounts!

Any suggestions for a good spam blocker? Oh and price range please. Not sitting on a lot of money right now, so looking at options. Thanks.

Oh and I have Outlook Express.

Who's your email service provider? A lot of providers are offering spam blockers now free with your monthly service charge. A lot of the free services like Gmail and Yahoo offer spam blockers and email forwarding (but I don't know if the email forwarding is free).

Yes, Gmail forwarding is free.

I've never purchased a "user side" spam blocker before so I can't give an opinion on that, but Molly is right in that your ISP should be helping with spam. On my own servers, I run two kinds of spam blockers. One is a couple "blacklists" that looks at the IP number of the sender and comparing that with known spam sources. The other looks in the message for links and compares the URLs in the message with that of known spam destinations and blocks those.

I had a hosting customer complain about the amount of spam he was getting and was upset that we are not doing more. So, I turned the spam blocking off of his account for a day. After getting about 200 spam messages, he decided that maybe the ten or so each day getting through was not so bad.

I use Outlook Express with my Comcast High Speed Account. We will hopefully very soon be switching To SBC/AT&T internet because Comcast is outrageous in cost.

I use Comcast and they have a spam blocker, but I still get about 10 a day! Probably what Web says is very true- they block most!

So basically I need to go through all of my maill & get rid of Outlook Express and try going through the Comcast screen. Thanks for the input all. Hopefully I won't have too many problems when I switch providers though.

I think SBC is with Yahoo now, because that's what I have at home. And Yahoo does have spam blockers. But, it blocks a lot of non-spam too, so I still take a look at my bulk mail folder every day.

I have a question.

I think I remember being told I cannot just post jpgs that do not come from a website, such as something I took on my own camera or scanned, without going through Mz H., is that correct?

You don't have to go through Mz, that's just a shortcut. Before you can post a picture, it has to be on the internet somewhere. There are lots of picture hosting websites out there, such as ImageShack, that you can upload your picture to. But Mz is really nice, and doesn't mind hosting them either. I believe Webguy and JR can host them for you too.

Yes, I can host pictures too but I think Mz's server is a little faster.
