Ford to lay off 30,000+ but isn't this cute

Ford to get cuddly with Muppets during Super Bowl

"It's not easy being green." Kermit the Frog has lived for years by this simple maxim, and Bill Ford has surely familiarized himself with the truism during his tenure at the helm of his great-granddaddy's corporation. While few would distrust the sincerity of the latter's environmentalist leanings, there's likewise little doubt that Ford's eco-consciousness has had a measure of trouble thriving within Dearborn's business model. But critically, both the shy Muppet and risen scion have perhaps found a bit of common ground in the company's Escape Hybrid.

As such, the Blue Oval is joining forces with the green amphibian for a television advertisement set to air during the second quarter of Super Bowl Sunday. The commercial featuring the 51-year-old frog and 48-year-old Ford will inaugurate a marketing campaign that will appear in print and digital ads, along with appearances on "a variety of TV shows."

Interestingly, the Muppet's maker's foundation recently awarded Toyota's Prius with the "The Jim Henson Technology Honor," but Ford's Escape Hybrid makes use of similar technology. And besides...the Blue Oval got Kermit and friends to turn left years ago, right?

From what I've been reading Ford really got stuck unprepared for this recent surge in oil prices.

They were saying they have seen their SUV and truck sales plummet and they're not prepared with smaller replacement vehicles that people want now.

But Kermit will fix everything

They need to sell cars to avoid laying people off. Now, how would they get the word out about the cars they are trying to sell...? These people aren't being laid off because Ford is sending jobs overseas, these people are being laid off because American cars aren't what they used to be...

It's not just Ford.  All of the auto makers are cutting jobs.  My soon-to-be brother-in-law works for Chrysler.  The plant he works in just did a bunch of layoffs.  Fortunately, he was not left unemployed, just had to change shifts.

I agree Mz, but I do think the SUV thing is huge too (for this most recent round of layoffs).

I can't beleive how full all our local used car lots are with trucks and SUVS.

It makes me so mad too. I remember three or four years ago wondering how SO MANY people could afford SUVS, because it seems the roads were 50% big trucks anda SUVS.

It also annoys me that they couldn't see this coming. I mean isn't it common sense? Half of America is using TWICE the gas to go the same distance as they were five years previously because of the gas hogging vehicles, couple that with the increased demand from China and DUH, demand goes up and gas prices will rise.

They should have not been so greedy and continued to push the more economical cars too.

But they've said themselves, those SUVS were the highest profit margin of any vehicle they've ever produced. So short term thinking wins out again.

I hate to see the lay offs like anyone else, but I only see this as a stunt to advertise and try to sell cars. Which is what I wish they could do so people could save their jobs!

but is W's fault--because people bought cars that were beyond their means, then gas prices went up, which was W's fault, so the market slowed down in purchasing, which was W's fault, so the layoff's happened, which was W's fault, because the american consumer demanded something prior to his administration, and when it didn't work out for them it's W's fault,

It get's better CP. If God forbid a Democrat gets into office after Bush is done it will STILL be Bushes fault for the entire run of that administration. All we'll hear is how they're stil fixing things from the Bush administration.

Yet when it comes to 9/11 and the economy it's as if a switch was flipped on the day Clinton left office and nothing that happened after election day was in any way his responsibility.

tell me why Bush is any good?

and don't give me "well without him, iraq would have invaded the united states by now....or china....."

cuz I promise you if the economy were solid, he'd take credit. he is probably taking credit that ford is only laying off 30,000 people and not 60,000....

probably taking credit that all the people in iraq are thankful to him as their great white savior....

JD,

You're moving away from arguing facts and figures and concepts to arguing from your emotion.

I don't know a single person that thinks Iraq was poised to attack the US directly.

In my view, and the view of those that support Bush, Iraq was indeed a part of the war in terror. So is Iran and Syria among others.

It would have been a much easier road for him to take to make some lame pin-prick retailiation for the events of 9/11. He certainly hasn't put himself in position to be a well-liked President.

But thats the vital difference between him and Clinton. Bush is concerned with the future safety of this country and with spreading democracy throughout the globe, not with his legacy.

The only thing Clinton worried about was his legacy.

the only way he is going to spread the ideology of democracy to a part of the world that doesn't either doesn't get it, gets killed by trying it out (car bomb at mcdonald etc) or simply doesn't want it is through war.

He believes, as i do, that in their heart all people want the freedom democracy brings.

Just because a country has centuries old history of living under a dictator doens't mean the people don't want freedom. It only means that when they've tried to express their freedom they have been killed (witness the mass graves found all over Iraq).

You criticize me for wanting to protect the entire country while not wanting to protect an individual, as if I'm being hypocritical.

Why don't you feel all these killings of innocent life at the hands of dictators are worth trying to stop? Talk about helping the underprivelaged, these people have lived in fear that if they stepped out of line with Saddams thinking that their FAMILY would be executed!

We've brought democracy to other countries before. it's hard work (to borrow a dubya phrase) but it can be done and the world is better for it.

In thirty years you and I can sit down and discuss this again. THAT is the ONLY time in which you will be able to fairly judge George Bush. And when that day comes we will be able to definately determine if he was a failure or a success.
