Secret Hidden Bank Fees

It always seems that I am getting hit at innopportune times with bank fees that screw up the balance of my checking account. So in the past 30 days I have gone out of my way to only use my bank's ATM for free.

Today I see a bank charge for $3.80. Enough is enough so I go to the bank at lunch to find out what this charge is.

Turns out I get charged 30 cents EACH TIME I USE MY CHECKING CARD AS DEBIT INSTEAD OF CREDIT. I had NO IDEA, I was NEVER TOLD THIS until I bought it up today.

So beware, I am not sure if others knows that this happens to them? The simple fix is to simply select credit instead of debit when using your checking card and then sign the receipt.

You're using 5th3rd, aren't you? I used to bank there. Stop messing with them and switch banks, their hidden fees will drive you nuts.

nah its TCF bank- not sure if they are just regional up here?

mark my words tho- I bet if I would have been overdrawn due to an unexpected BANK charge,  they'd assess the overdraft fee! what a racket!

I hate bank fees too. My bank does not charge anything but a 6 dollar monthly fee, unless you use a foreign ATM. I never do!

I'm using a small local bank, and they don't charge the fees that most banks do. I have to pay to use someone else's atm, and if I overdraw of course, and I have to buy my own checks, but that's it.

My bank offers free checking, free checks, free overdraft protection, and free most everything else. There is a fee for using a foreign ATM but that's about it.

I wonder if it helps that I'm sleeping with my banker?

We found that out about our debit card too. So we always use it as credit. Our bank was just bought out by some Ohio bank. I'm seriously thinking about switching to Eli Lilly Federal Credit Union. Since my mom retired from there we can join. They offer everything a bank does and they seem to be more attentive to the needs of their members. My mom has been on me to switch for years. Maybe now is the time to do it.

I used to be with Teachers Credit Union, and loved it until last year. But generally, credit unions are the way to go.

I belong to a credit union. The only fees I would pay would be for bouncing a check when there wasn't money to overdraft and I pay for my box of checks. No ATM fees, no checking fees, no minimums, etc.

Credit Unions are generally a little less fee intensive

What also helps is not having any money. The bank can't charge you anything if you are poor, only have $10 in your account and you don't write checks or try to take out any money.

After taking the cash option and paying taxes, the take home would be about $78 million. Even with giving a lot away I would never be able to spend that much.

Well, duh. I am an accountant. I will have to have something to do. Playing with money sounds like fun. No one within my family would have to worry about a thing. A few of my friends would make out nicely in the deal too. I would have to have some sound investments.

Go Flyers!

Go Wings!
