Please advise.

I use our local bank and we just recently were able to get a debit card for our account. I still haven't gotten one yet. Our county is so stuck in the last century that you can go to the local gas station and there are checks sitting there that have the bank name on them and you fill in the account number and write it out. They're called counter checks. Sometimes they are a great thing and sometimes they are really, really bad. Like the time my hubby went to a bachelor party and started playing 654, a bar game. He wrote out tons of the counter checks and I had no idea. I don't think he did, either. I got them in and there was like $150 in counter checks. I could have choked him. That's probably why I haven't gotten the debit cards. Also, we just (this month) got online access to our accounts. Wooohooooo! Welcome to the 20 th century in the 21st century. We're kind of backward where we live. I can still remember when we didn't have caller id and the dialing was rotary. There are still party lines in some areas where we live. I think we've had caller id for about 5 to 7 years. Oh, our bank doesn't have any hidden fees. And they are pretty good about when you have to get assessed one. Back when we made zero money and would bounce a couple of checks (which I'm not proud of), they would charge us just one time, when the actual overdraw occurred. I had another account in the "city" and, though I never overdrew that account, they told me upfront that they would charge for every check that bounced. Yikes. I closed it when I quit my job in the city. Better end this novella on hick life.

I just got a call from an old co-worker.

She just had a $400 check bounce because it cleared before her direct deposit hit. The bank charged her a $150.00 overdraft fee! I'm not kidding! $150.00!!!!!

She called and they dropped it because only a short while later the direct deposit arrived, but they told her the high fee was because of how big the overdraft was (they paid it for her, but then tried to charge her the ridiculous fee).

YIKES!

Gone are the days of writing and mailing checks to pay for bills four and five days before you get paid. The new check laws changed that. You better not write a check without money in you account to cover it that day or maybe the next day.
