My true calling?

I don't know if I've stated on this forum or not....I've always wanted to be a nurse.  I went to nursing school for a year & a half then I moved & none of my credits transferred.  Anyhow...I've learned A LOT of stuff over the past week with all that's going on with Richard.  I hook up & unhook this leg machine he's connected to (to prevent clots  from forming).  I've set & reset his oxygen levels when he switches from the nasal tubes to the mask & back.  I've had to figure out this cold blanket machine they have him laying on.  I've fed him.  I've cleaned him.  I've helped him with extremely personal tasks without getting too grossed out.  I even had a nurse tell me I should be a nurse today.  I also met one of the nursing professors from one of the colleges in town.

Maybe all that Richard is going through is someone's way of telling me to get off my booty, go back to school & become what I probably should have been from day one.

Whaddaya think?

Aww that is a great way to look at things. When my mother first ended up in the hospital for 5 months I did all those things. But I learned that I love her and do not mind doing all that stuff, but on a stranger or someone who is a jerk- I could not do it.

But God does work in mysterious ways and do not let that inner voice be silenced!

A agree with Ruby.

When my Dad was in the hospital I did things during those two weeks that would have totally grossed me out with anyone else, but with my Dad it was like a clinical thing and it just didn't affect me.

If you feel like you could do that for anyone then that's a true gift, and you should definately pursue it because we always need more people willing to take care of the sick and/or dying.

I walked away from the experience with my father truly beleiving that most of the nurses on the fifth floor of St. Josephs hospital are like living angels. In fact, I've given serious thought to running a small fund drive every year in my fathers honor, and using the money collected to purchase something for the cancer ward of the hospital (something to help make the patients and their families more comfortable) along with a small gift for each of the nurses each year to let them know how important their work is.

GO FOR IT PAMBO!

Go for it Pambo

Ask Yourself: "If I don't try again, might I regret not trying?"

If you answer yes then don't make a regret for yourself. I'd go for it...if it works out then fantastic...if it doesn't work out then you will have at least had a go and at least you'll know you tried, - It all adds to the experience of life.

I used to be a registered nurse here in England and enjoyed that part of my life so much... Circumstances lead me eventually to moving direction, and I have no desire to go back to it in the same way...but even if I go visiting ...theres  always that slight pang in my guts and a slight tweak of the heart string...

I have ended that chapter in my book of life, but I am so priveleged and honoured to have written it...

if you think you'd be happy with that line of work then by all means go 4 it !

a number of years ago when I lived in Savannah Ga. some of the hospitals actualy paid for the schooling, you had to sign a contract that you,d work for them for x amount of years after graduation and you passed the boards.  It's a good paying job with a future.

Around here, nurses are so hard to find they'll pay you a full 40 hour week to just work two 12 hour shifts over the weekends!

I think there is a nationwide shortage , the papers here are flat full of adds in the health care field , you could probly pick where you wanted to live.

also - I knew a girl who did the hospital -school thing , she did the 4 year course in 2 , it was tuff at times but she made it , and I'll tell ya something I learned from being around her , the nurses know more than the doctors!

Ya know Pambo, we could use a nurse around the forum for some free advice too!

We could post pictures or symptoms and you can diagnose and treat us!

There is something noble and selfless in caring for others when they are ill.

God makes us all stong for a little while so that we help each other.
