I have been watching a press conference for 40 minutes with the Washington Press corp absolutely GRILLING Scott McClellan about the Cheney Shooting.

It's insane! These guys are acting like it's Watergate! WHY DIDN'T WE KNOW SOONER? HOW COME IT TOOK THE WHITEHOUSE 12 HOURS TO KNOW EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED, Etc Etc Etc.

And now one stupid a** reporter has compared this situation to the levee breaks in New Orleans, asking if the lack of immediate knowledge by the white house is a problem that they need to address.

McClellan has already explained that this was a four person hunting trip and it didn't include the entire VP enterage (since obviously you don't want two dozen people along on a hunting trip), but the press is still hounding him on why the info trickled out slowly.

I gotta turn on some cartoons

JD,

It's more than ratings. These press people are rabid, they want blood. David Gregory is leading the charge, basically making it sound like a scandal.

McClellan FINALLY said no more questions because he's just been getting the same 5 questions asked 20 different ways.

okay, i can't watch the news at work.  i can't watch cartoons either -- darn THE MAN.  anyhow, fill me in.  most importantly-- did anyone DIE?

the press ..... arghhhhhhhhhh!  for instance, this friday, coach stoops (OSU) was in a car accident and was supposedly going 60 mph (on a street where the mph is propably 40) and crashed another car.  he was taken to the hospital had a ct scan which supposedly came out alright and supposedly was released so he could catch another plane to (houston i think).  but then on sunday, he was supposedly still in the hospital...

ughhhhh!  the press really jacks up the information!  any information!

I just read a news report that called the guys condition "very stable". This is very good, but I can't wait to hear that his condition improves to "extremely stable" or even "exceedingly stable".

I think the should make a big deal out of the vp shooting someone... if it was any joe schmo off the street- hed probably be in jail- accident or not...at the very least he should have to do a hunters safety course and do some community service for shooting his pal....

I agree that it's news & apparently safety for him is an issue. But asking if he is going to resign is ridiculous.

now just take a second and wonder "what if" what if he had shot him fatally.... now that would be a scandal..... glad the guy was just hurt a little and is doing well though.

i agree with the issue of hunter's safety course.  i think it should be like a driver's licence and should be renewed every so often including a written test.  including politicians!

IF he shot him fatally this would definately be a different story. But that's not the story the press is covering, they're covering a simple hunting accident.

This is buckshot, not a bullet. They pull some pellets out of the guys rump and he'll be fine.

I don't think the average joe would do jail time for this, unless the victim pressed charges and claimed it was not an accident. This isn't like a street shooting, accidents on hunting trips happen all the time.

Oh, by the way, I do agree too that if the standard course of action in a case like this is to take a hunters safety course I think the VP should have to do that too. He shouldn't be let off the hook just because he's VP. But again, that's IF that's the standard action after this type of situation.

Even if it's not though, he could use it as a good photo-op and teaching lesson to other hunters. It would be a good PR move to just take a one day course anyway.

From what I've heard from other hunters in the office, this type of accident is evidently quite common when hunting quail.    Both guys I heard talking had been shot and and one had accidentally hit another guy in his hunting party.  Don't let the media out there fool you into thinking this is a fluke or that Cheney is at fault.  According to the guys I've been listening to, you should always let your party know where you are.  This guy had fallen behind and gotten separated.

They were saying that on the news, that the victim had gone back to get a quail he killed and never let the rest of the hunters know he was back on the line, so Cheney thought he was clear to his left when a bird flew by.

Although they're also saying a GOOD hunter will still verbally check to make sure the person who would NORMALLY be on his left isn't back from collecting his kill before taking a shot to the side like that.

The bottom line regardless I guess is that it was an accident, but T-Girl reminded me of the details and the fact that if Cheney's gonna be going for safety training the victim is going to need to as well, because I too have heard that he was actually more at fault for being someplace he basically shouldn't be without notifying the hunting line that he was there.

And just for the record, I'm not trying to turn this into a political thing.

Ted Kennedy (the man I despise) could have been in Cheney's place and I still would have thought the press was being ridiculous.

Of course, I also woulda wondered how many Cocktails the good Senatar had downed before picking up his gun

Do we REALLY think John Kerry would be treated this way if this had happened to him?!?  They certainly wouldn't be asking for HIS resignation.

That's the thing, it's a hunting accident, it's his personal life, it's not a political thing. The same thing as if the president is sleeping with an intern, that's a personal thing, not political. If his personal life is getting in the way of his job, then I care, otherwise who gives a darn. Next they'll be talking about how long it took the white house to let us know that the president got a paper cut.

OK.  I have to reply or I'll explode.

When Mr. Cheney is sued by this fellow hunter, lies UNDER OATH, and denies that it happened UNDER OATH, THEN I too want Mr. Cheney's resignation.  Let's remember though that Cheney's "Personal Tragedy" wasn't illegal.

Don't want to offend anyone out there, but I do bristle at the "Personal should stay personal".  It wasn't during a game of "20 questions" that President Clinton lied,  It was during his deposition of the Sexual Harassment of Paula Jones..

Ok.  I'm off my soapbox, and I hope everyone will still consider me a friend of the forum.

The Mediator keeps the peace! GOOD JOB!

One last thought though, if Cheney were to shoot someone in the oval office by accident this would be a bigger story.

My problem with Clintons personal life was that he was getting blow jobs in the oval office and lying about it under oath.

If he had gone in the evening to a local motel and had sex with Monica it would still be disgusting, but THEN it wouldn't be my business. In my opinion, and that's all it is, if you're in the oval office you're on the clock, and you're not getting paid to have sexual relations with that girl.

the questions aren't the problem . the answers are :

reporter - will he resign ?

answer -  why ?  any body else got a moronic question to ask ?

as long as the W. House spokesman keeps answering these idiotic  Q's , they'll keep asking them . its that simple.

Yeah, but Dave, you know if they don't answer the moronic questions they're stonewalling.

And again, this goes down both sides of the isle. I see the press asking Dems some pretty stupid questions too.

I agree though, they should just ignore the question when it's that idiotic.

The press has annointed itself the 4th leg in the checks and balances of this country...which is fine if they can pursue all leads with equal unbias...but It seems like there is true hatred for all things connected with the Bush administration...

To compare Cheney's hunting accident to Kennedy leaving a woman to die is totally incongruous. Besides, there was no cover up by Cheney...they just didnt go to the press for a day until they had the fact in line...

If they havent asked for Kennedy's resignation for his indiscretions...then how can the media ask for anyones with a straight face...no double standard there.

I think all of the press should be in Torino filming the Olympics! It should be on all day on more than one channel. These kids/young adults have worked hard and can be an inspiration to many- or at least entertainment!
