speaking of valentine's day...

i don't know...  valentine's day just doesn't do it for me like it used to.  usually i get my man a card and a little something and put it with his things before he leaves in the morning, as he leaves the house before me; but i don't usually get acknowledgement until the pm.  what i think is going on, is that i'm just reminding him about the love holiday and what he does is just last minute...  i don't think he is the only guy out there like this.  do any of you guys have this same disease?  and does it only aflict men?

hmmm.....I don't know it seems like sort of an inconveniently placed weekday holday created by the greeting card folks.....if it were a real holiday we'd have the day off!

yes, i agree.  i think i will go to THE MAN with that one and tell him that i will be taking the day off.  oops, i can't do that.  i have to make sure i remind him of the occasion so that i can order flowers for him to send to his women...

I think valentines day should be a mandatory day off for everyone in the world. everything should shut down on v-day. it will give couples a day to relax and reconnect and singles a chance to go out and meet someone. people in love and content are ahppy people. perhaps the world would bea happier place if everyone had that one day to reflect on life and love.

Ooooh sounds good! But the day off must be paid.

My husband caught me off guard a week ago and asked me what I wanted for Valentine's Day. Luckily, I was sitting down at the time. My first response was, "We don't do anything for Valentine's Day. What brought this question up?" Apparently his friend bought his girlfriend a ring. Darn, I think I blew my chance at a new ring. But, I would rather spend time with him than have a ring anyway.

Oh, and my ultimate answer for what I wanted for Valentine's day: Candlelight pizza.

I'm suspicious. He's made a bigger deal out of Valentine's Day this year than he ever has before. Usually it's just another Hallmark holiday, but he's psyched about ordering a pizza and watching movies. He even knows what movies he wants to rent. Oh well, I won't complain, pizza and a movie is a perfect date night for me!

ah ha, molly!  an illustration of the disease...  why do they ask us what we want.  they should know us well enough to not have to ask!

On the way back from lunch, I picked up a card for my wife and a card for the boy to give to mom.

Yes, I know what my wife likes, but I still don't know what she wants for Valentine's day. They are not necessarily the same thing.

I'm pretty easygoing. If he's going to buy me something, I just don't want to be there when he buys it (he's got a bad habit of doing that too). I don't care if he asks, though he's pretty good at surprising me with some wildflowers or chocolate on a regular basis too. That's why I don't need Valentine's Day.

And Web does have a good point, a lot of couples seem to have a lack of communication between what he thinks she wants and what she's expecting...

web guy!  yay!  see, you seem to have your ducks in a row!  and including the little guy in on the concept!  if i can count on anyone to show me the love it will be my daughter -- she is twenty but still calls me "mommy" and tells me she loves me even in front of her college friends.

I've never been a big fan of Valentine's Day.  Commercialized love just doesn't do it for me.  Unfortunately, my husband takes this as a personal afront and therefore seeks to make a big deal out of it.  Yes, I do reciprocate despite my personal feelings about this day.  I even get candy for my friends.  I know, I know... hypocracy alert!!

I think Valentines day is cool. For a variety of reasons.

The COMPLETELY made up one that ticks me off is SWEETEST DAY.

Basically it's just a cheap knock-off of Valentines day to sell more crap

Valentine's day is fine. I have mellowed in the past few years.  Forever I would do my salute to Johnny Cash and wear all black.  I've given up on that.

As for gifts, I expect nothing from the man.  If he puts the hamper of clothes that has been in our living room for 2 weeks away, I'll consider that a good present.

Though tonight, we are doing it up and making a 3 course fondue meal. Should be a hoot.

And yes, Sweetest day is a crock.

I agree.  It's odd to me that people are expected to be in a romantic mood just because of the date on the calendar.  Neither my husband nor I buy into that.

Therefore, I think I will request appropriately.  Not going so far as to say "Love Stinks", but I will request The Cross "Dirty Mind," which is about sex as opposed to romance.  And being as Roger Taylor is one of the sexiest rock stars of all time (yes, even old & bloated, the man is hot), this works very well for me.

My wife and I don't get into the "Valentine Trap". I did buy her the new Barry Manilow CD but that was it. No card. She told me last night that she didn't get any cards and didn't want anything. I told her it was too late I had a gift but no card. It's not a big deal for us. I did surprise her Friday. I bought a new stove, refrigerator and dishwasher. Ours were 15 years old and were starting to act like it. She didn't know I did it. Got her the stuff she wanted though. We had been looking for the last month or so. I had an idea of what to get. Since there was a deal for 3 years no interest I jumped at the opportunity. I didn't even plan that it was around Valentines day just happened that way.

My hubby is much more into Valentines Day than I am. I told him if he bought me roses this year I would strangle him. It's kind of like Mother's Day. Love me all year long. Show me you love me all year long. Do little things when it is unexpected. Don't do it just because someone made a holiday of it and you think you have to buy into it.

Yes, in fact my Dad liked that song too.

My point exactly!  I'd rather get a random carnation any other day of the year than a dozen roses just because it's February 14th.   It's much more meaningful when there is no expectation.
