Okay, HERE'S the REAL problem with Top 40 radio.

It always aggrevated me when I was growing up that people would gripe about Top 40 radio and how repetitive it was.

IT'S SUPPOSED TO BE REPETITIVE! It's Top 40 radio! The purpose of T40 radio is so that when there's a new song out you can turn on your favorite T40 station and be likely to hear it relatively soon. It's not a format that was meant to be listened to all day long, like say, Freeze-Frame Radio is

Ok, so here's where the REAL problem actually is. It's not in their current rotation of hits, but rather in their recurrent singles.

I was listening to our T40 station last night around 6 PM, as I do every weekday evening. I have been tuning in lately because I just can't get enough of INXS and PRETTY VEGAS, and it's still in their heavy rotation, so I usually catch it 3 or 4 nights a week even though I'm only tuning in for an hour and a half (see, it's working exactly as it should).

BUT, as they have always done, they don't play just any old hit to fill space on the air, instead they obviously have a RECURRENT ROTATION of maybe 50 or 60 hits. Right now Joan Jett's "I LOVE ROCK & ROLL" is back in their recurrent rotation. I have heard it EVERY NIGHT for six straight nights now!

THAT is annoying. I've noticed other songs too, I bet I could name 30% of the old stuff they are currently rotating in.

This is why radio get's a bad rap. Because this T40's stations playlist consists of only about 50 new songs and 50 old songs and THAT'S IT! Maybe next week they'll add 3 new songs (while removing 3 as well), and they'll change their "oldies" list to include 5 or so different songs (again, while dropping 5), but it will still be almost an identical broadcast OVER AND OVER.

Why?

Just tell me WHY?!?!?

You said it earlier. You're not supposed to listen all the time. It's fast-food radio. Plus the audience they aim for has A.D.D.

Top 40 radio drives me crazy. Unfortunately I think it's another sign that I'm getting old.

Either that or radio has just got worse. I use to listen to it all the time & now they practically ruin songs for me. When I get in the car I can almost guarantee which songs I will hear! When the Rhianna song came out we would hear it every time we got in the car-same with Mariah.

There is no radio in my life but FFR and an awesome independent station here that is true to the FFR format and playlist

There for a couple of weeks while I was driving in in my old van that did not have a CD player, I listened to the local T40 station. Every day it was the same songs at the same time. I could almost set my clock by it. The odd one was Ace of Bass "Don't turn around". That was weird. Got my new van and I only listen to my burned CD's. If it's not FFR, I don't want it.
