Oh Great Excel Users!

Namely Fuzzy, but I figure that other people here might know this too.

I want to color my lines so I can see them better, for example, 1st line gray, 2nd line white, 3rd line gray, 4th line white, etc. Is there a way to automatically do that, or would I have to highlight all the rows I want to change to gray?

Awe Nuts!

I just heard this talked about on one of the podcasts I listen to. Someone called in asking how to do that and it is possible, but since I don't use Excel or wasn't really needing that, I didn't pay that much attention to the details of how to do it.

Yeah, it's something I couldn't figure out how to do on my own, and I know a lot about Excel. I need someone even more advanced than me, and Fuzzy popped into my head.

I found where they were talking about it !

This guy just wanted ever other line highlighted like the old green/white paper:
"As for the green bar style of the old computer paper, first choose your records and then choose AutoFormat… from the Format menu and select either List 1 or List 2 from the available formats. (This is from the Mac version, but it should be pretty much the same on the PC.)"

Maybe Mr. Excel might talk more about it on his site.

I'd rather be able to track the same line all the way over to the right without jumping lines, so no, it won't make me dizzy for what I need it for.

Hey Molly,

I know how.  I'll trying writing out instructions.  If I'm not clear, respond back and I'll give you my phone #.

1)Get your pattern established.

2)Highlight your pattern using the numbered lines on the left.

3)Go to the last line you've highlighted and left click with your mouse the bottom right hand corner of the box. (There's about 4 different +'s patterns.  You want to move your curser around until it is a true + sign, nothing with arrows or like that.

4) Now with your left clicker still down page down as far as you want on your spreadsheet.  Once you release, it should prefill your colors.

5)  That was VERY DIFFICULT to put into words.  Let me know if you have trouble and I'll give you my phone #.   You can call me.

Molly - I usually highlight as an after effect. So it is different than what you are doing. Since you have an in-depth knowledge of things in the compter world, I am suggesting that you take a look at the link below. I believe that should help you. At least I hope it does. Good luck.

You know, there's more than one way to skin a cat.  Webguy's sounds much faster and easier.  I've learned something today too!!

And look at that, Web gave you the easy way. My bad. Just becareful if you are going to sort the data after you build it. The formatting may hold true to the line numbers and not your data.

Yeah, Web gave me the easy way. I am sorting and such as I go along, but I just go do the autoformat again, and it's all better.

That's okay, frankly, this time I didn't expect Web to know for once. I should've known better...

I have come to believe that Web knows it all.

And if he doesn't, he'll know where to look for it.

If had some more useful brain cells, I might be half as good as he is.

I was going to say that well except for the useful brain cells part.

I think you're giving Web too much credit.

I didn't know the answer, I had just heard it discussed a couple weeks ago and found it in the past show notes.

But Web, you knew where to find an answer. That still counts.
