Fireflies

Ok another region question. Growing up in the north I loved fireflies and catching them and then keeping them in a jar. Do you have them where you live? I don't . No snow or fireflies

I have fireflies. Of course we have more in our more country areas than in downtown areas. I always liked catching them. The were kind of a wonder to me, just like butterflies.

LOL . . . The first time, I read that as "another religion" question. Then I was trying to figure out what having fireflies had to do with religion.

We have fireflies here too.

I love fireflies!!!! There's nothing like a warm summer night roasting hot dogs and marshmellows over an open fire and catching fireflies!

When I was a kid growing up in Wisconsin I NEVER saw a firefly. I heard about them, and thought they sounded cool, but we just did not have them.

In the late 90's they started being very common around here and now every summer they're everywhere.

I always heard that they only light up when they fly upward, but last year I was out with the dog (while she did her business) and one flew near my face. I had a clipboard with me so I whacked the thing and he fell to the ground fully lit.

I swear to God that thing laid there on the pavement, fully lit for at least 10 minutes!!! I came back out a good 15 minutes later and he still had a little flicker of light in him!

Shows what the scientists know! Those things are clearly battery powered!

I think the lights serve two purposes: 1) mating, 2) distress cry. I swear, you grab a firefly and the thing lights up like crazy!

We have fireflies here, but seems like they are impossible to catch.

We have them. And explaining them to a young one is fun. Usually you have to catch them, hope they don't fly off your hand right away and then show the kid. They aren't called June bugs for any reason. Ours usually show up in late May though. Then you have that month and a half or two that they are everywhere and then they fade out and are gone. We used to get a container, poke holes (okay more like slots) in the lid and see how many we could get. Then we would let them all go and go inside for the night.

Does anyone else actually call them lightening bugs? I was just wondering if that was a regional thing here.

We call them lightening bugs too. But ours usually are at their peak in July, not June.

We sometimes call them lightening bugs too but our "June Bugs" are something totally different. They are nasty giant beetle-like bugs that swarm you I swear!

Growing up out west, I call them fireflies - but this area calls them "light-nin" bugs.  My ex and I used to argue over their name (also about cyclone/chain link fencing).  I think "FIREFLIES" describes them better.  We have them all over in the summer - mostly in July.  So pretty!!

Tennessee & Kentucky are both blessed with "Lightning Bugs".

I have a question.  What do you all call the green watering tube in your back yard that's used to water plants and wash your car.  In Kentucky, we called it a garden hose.  Tennesseans call it a hose pipe!!

growing up at the foothills of the rockies, we had fireflies.  moved to oklahoma and we have lightning bugs.  the only difference i can tell is that the bulb on the fireflies is bigger than the bulb on the lightning bugs.  i guess they are the same thing --  their little butts light up, right?
