RE: Scientologist Hayes quits South Park

I'm always interested in studying religion, so I've been reading a lot about Scientology in the past day. I think I found the perfect middle of the road website written by an exScientologist that explains what Scientology really is and debunks some of the more popular myths.: What is Scientology?

Thanks for the website Molly.  Different religions interest me too.  Our Bible class one quarter did a study of World Religions and the next quarter we studied Christian denominations.  We tried to see what we share in common as well as our differences.  The class really held my attention.

That's a great idea! I wish more churches would do that.

Wow, Tom and John are at high levels. Go figure. They have high dollar amounts tied to it.

I have explored other religions. I believe in being an informed Christian and voter. I would never vote for a candidate I know nothing about, so I don't go to a church unless I have explored all the options and are comfortable with my choice. I was raised Catholic, but I chose it as an adult. I don't believe in going with what's popular. I think the biggest problem I have with Scientology seems to be their lack of tolerance. Tom Cruise really hit me wrong when he criticized Brooke Shields for turning to medication for her postpartum depression. Of course, I don't like Tom Cruise anyway. I guess my problem with celebrities is that I hold them to a moral standard and that colors my opinion of them. I don't like to watch them if I don't respect them. Unfortunately, the list of people that I actually like to see in movies is getting very short. Sigh.

Trish has stepped down from her soapbox and is trying not to slip on the suds.

You know though, in all the research I've done over the past 24 hours, I haven't read a thing about Scientologists not using modern medicine. Christian Scientists are the ones who don't believe in modern medicine. Maybe Tom was just off his rocker there.

Wow Trish, I'm right there with you!

Over the past ten years I have come to really feel a dislike for a lot of Hollywood actors. I just think they live in their little dream world and with a few exceptions have no clue what the average person has to go through in life.

To me, all they do is a job, no different than a guy working in a factory. Their job is to make movies or TV shows. I don't want their opinion on religion, politics, fashion or anything else. And I get particularly aggrevated when they get on their soap box about important social issues because I don't think it's right that they can influence so many empty headed young adults with their thoughts just because they're who they are.

Your voice, your views are heard by your friends and family, their voice is heard by millions, and with that ability comes a responsibility. I think they should be more careful with what they say and when they say it.

There, you can have your soap box back now

Hey Molly, in regards to modern medicince, I don't think the Scientologists are opposed to anything except the mind-altering things.  Hospitals are doctors are fine.  They are opposed to the psychological Drs. (Probably because their shrinks would disagree with their religion).  I do know Tom doesn't drink, smoke, or do drugs and that several of the Hollywood set attribute their breaking the habits to Scientology.

And JR, I'm with you on hearing their opinions.  The next time I want to hear a high-school drop-out give me his opinion of world matters, I'll go down the street and ask the person at McDonalds taking my order.

There's a few of them that I can respect.

For example. Even though I TOTALLY disagree with his views, Tim Robbins & Susan Sarandon really take politics seriously and devote a great deal of their time to it. So when one of them appears on say Larry King and talks about politics, I can respect their opinions because it's clear they are well informed and know what they're talking about (even if they're wrong )

But when a dufus like Alec Baldwin just runs around the country turning his promotional junkets into an opportunity to declare he'll move to Canda if Bush is elected (by the way, we're still waiting for him to follow through on that) I think he just shows himself to be an idiot running on nothing but emotion.

Unfortunately young Alec Baldwin fans out there (if there actually are any) may be getting their ONLY political information from this butt head.

JR - I must confess I do like to hear George Clooney rant and rave.  I just keep hoping that one day he'll leave the dark side and join our forces.

I'll let them keep Sean Penn, Bette Midler and Barbra Streisand

You know, George Clooney is one of those guys I REALLY WANT to like. He seems like his personal views aside he's a cool guy.

I think it would be like my friendship with JD. JD is the opposite on almost everything from me, but we respect each others opionion and it never gets in the way of our friendship.

I still don't think Clooney should abuse his position, but I'm on the fence with him because I think he may be pretty into this stuff.

To that degree, even though I really dislike Penn, I do know that he probably spends more time trying to change the world than he does acting. So I begrudginly give him my respect.

On 'South Park,' a Chef Who's Not Toast

Still basking in the boffo ratings generated by the controversy surrounding the yanked "South Park" episode that skewered Tom Cruise and Scientology, Comedy Central announced yesterday that the show's 10th-season kickoff tomorrow night will be all about Chef.

The character of Jerome "Chef" McElroy was at the eye of the storm last week when Isaac Hayes, who has given voice to the advice-dispensing school cook since the show debuted in 1997, announced last week he wanted out of his contract because he'd just noticed the show mocks religion.

(Apparently he'd forgotten that just last January he'd told the New York Daily News that he loved the "humor" and "audacity" of show creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker. "Nobody is exempt from their humor," he said. "They're equal-opportunity offenders. Don't be offended by it. If you take it too seriously, you have problems.")

Stone and Parker swiftly retaliated, noting that Hayes had never had any problems in nearly 10 years cashing his "South Park" checks.

They declared in the news media and on late-night television that Hayes being shocked -- shocked -- to discover there was satire going on in "South Park" was really all about the fact that the animated series in November had done an episode savaging the Church of Scientology, of which Hayes is a member.

(So is Tom Cruise, who also was lampooned in the episode and who, as you are reading this, is out promoting "Mission: Impossible III," a flick produced at no small expense by Paramount. A division of Viacom under Chief Executive Tom Freston, by the way. As is Comedy Central. Small world, isn't it?)

Comedy Central was going to rerun that episode last Wednesday night but pulled it without warning. Which must have ticked off the nearly 2 million people who tuned in to see it -- more than double the show's audience the previous two nights.

While other animated shows take months to create, the producers of "South Park" can churn out an episode in days, enabling Parker and Stone to jump on current events. Their "Christmas in Canada" episode, depicting the capture of Saddam Hussein, aired three days after his arrest by U.S. forces, Wikipedia notes.

In tomorrow night's season debut, the little Colorado town is jolted out of a case of the doldrums when Chef suddenly reappears, Comedy Central announced yesterday.

The four potty-mouth half-pints of South Park -- Stan, Kyle, Kenny and Cartman -- are thrilled to have their old friend back but they notice that something about Chef "seems different," the network says, without elaborating. When Chef finds himself in trouble thanks to his new ways, "the boys pull out all the stops to save him," the network said.

Having had our chains yanked last Wednesday by the suits at Comedy Central, do they actually think they can get us to tune in tomorrow night with such an obvious ploy?

Drat!

It will be interesting to see what they do with the character.  I saw clips of the South Park episode that caused all the heartburn on the news last night.  I wish I had seen the whole show now. Quite funny really, but I suppose I can see why the Scientologists are upset.  It really is too bad that these folks have no capacity to make fun of themselves.

Did anyone watch the season opener last night? I saw some of it. But I didn't want to discuss it if someone taped it and hadn't watched it yet.

You easily noticed how they patched the voices together from past shows so you noticed that something was "wrong" with Chef.

Do you think he is still "alive"? They had that end scene, but it leaves it kind of up in the air. I guess that was in case Hayes decided not to quit.

He looked pretty damn dead, but then came the Darth Vader moment, so who knows?  I'm stll trying to digest the whole thing.

well, I know I better not get on Matt Stone and Trey Parker's bad side.  LOL!!!

They got Isaac Hayes back 1000-fold last night.  "I wanna make love to..." "the children".   That was brilliant how they used all of his past dialogue against him.
