Queen & Paul Rogers Tonight in Milwaukee

Should be fun!

Roster changes can rock bands to their roots
Music history teaches us that some stand-ins don't always stand out from the crowd

Freddie Mercury is irreplaceable.

Paul Rodgers would be the first to tell you so.

Mercury, the late frontman for Queen, was an icon thanks to the combination of operatic voice, mesmerizing stage presence and signature figure-skater-as-rock-star outfits.

Rodgers is no slouch himself in the legends department: The 56-year-old Englishman gave us such classics as "Feel Like Makin' Love" and "All Right Now," among many others, during his storied career.

When Rodgers performed with the surviving members of Queen at a gala in London two years ago, the chemistry among the musicians felt right. After a few more shows, they decided on a full-fledged world tour, which will make a stop at the Bradley Center on Monday - but they won't be performing as Queen.

It's "Queen + Paul Rodgers," thanks very much, a somewhat cumbersome marquee heading that reflects, says Rodgers, the nature of what the show is, and what it is not.

"The question for me was not can I replace Freddie, but would I like to sing these great songs with these great musicians," Rodgers said.

The evening's set list, for example, will be drawn from both Queen's canon and Rodgers' own hit parade as a solo artist and member of Bad Company and Free.

Rodgers knows better than to try to fill Mercury's platform shoes - we just wish all would-be stand-ins for famous rock frontmen were as smart. Consider this mere sampling of the dubious history of surrogates, fill-ins and secondhand singers . . . and we don't even have the time or space to get into the whole Deep Purple roster.

The show was really good. Being that there was no Freddie, and these guys are closing in on 60 yrs old, there was a lack of posturing and pretentiousness. These were just a bunch of guys having fun doing what they've always loved doing- being who they are- world class entertainers.

They hit the stage with "Tie Your Mother Down"- great energy, great harmonies. The lighting rig and sound system was just phenomenal, as expected. Brian Mays guitar was so loud it hit you in the gut with sound. This led into "Fat Bottomed Girls".

Some interesting highlights- Roger Taylor came out front to sing a duet with Brain May on "These are the days of our Lives"- great harmonizing. You really got a feel for the voices that backed Freddie in the day. Taylor also took the lead for the first half of "Radio Gaga"

Brian May did a solo "Love of My Life", and he really really did a good job. This led into an almost gospel version of "Hammer to Fall" that kicked into the real deal. I think this, "Under Pressure" and "We Will ROck You" were the highlites!

Also, it was something else to hear a Queenified version of "Feel Like Makin Love"- it became an anthem more than a little love song!

It seemed like the crowd was =ly into the Rogers stuff as much as the Queen stuff, I was suprised by that!

Cool.  Sounds a lot like the one I saw.

And we had some rabid Paul Rodgers fans in our crowd too.

Eww, really?  God I've always hated that look.  But we've been over this before!

Hey - Did Paul Rodgers have more costume changes than Diana Ross?

That made me smile.  (Not that he didn't look fabulous in each of his outfits, because he certainly did!)  I am so impressed with his physique!

what got us is than when he stood next to Brain May, he only looked to be 4 ft tall!! Unless Brian is 6"6' or something?!

Brian IS a tall guy!  Did you have good seats for the show?

yes- second level- 5 rows up from the floor, near the back, but the stage extended 1/2 way out into the crowd- very cool!!

This just occured to me- Freddie would be, if still alive, a few months short of being 60 yrs old!

The catwalk really does make a big difference in feeling like they're closer to everyone in the crowd.  I love it.

Amazing to think of that, but it's true.  Roger & Brian are both in their late 50's.  It freaked me out when the youngest Monkee (Davy) turned 60!

I know!  To see them together on stage (this was my first time seeing them together in person) was just stunning.  I'm serious when I say it was one of the most magical nights of my life.

Played some Queen tonight. And just was stunned once again at how Freddie Mercury is THE standard, still, by which all vocalists will be forever judged. Still stunned that if he were still alive, he'd be near 60. I can't picture it. In sort of a sad way, I wonder if that thought crossed his mind ever...

Curious - What album were you playing?

I think when someone is terminally ill, they have a lot of time to think, and all of those things cross their minds.

Jazz. But it just occur to me that their last album was filled with thoughts of mortality and loss, etc. But I guess I was thinking about earlier Queen- did Freddie in his 20's ever think "good god, there is no way I could be doing this in my 60s"....I think I was just trying to imagine a 61 yr old Freddie Mercury and I can't do it...

I would think we've all thought about where we'll be if & when we hit 60 years old. I know I have.

As far as Freddie, I think he probably had thought about it, because it's one of those annoying questions that all interviewers ask rock stars!
