Braces

Did you have them? I am getting ready to have to put them on my son. I had them too, though, when I was 13-14. Not that bad of an experience- glad I did it. My teeth were not that bad, but I wanted them to be as perfect as possible. They have shifted though, but still look fine.

I was given the choice of getting braces for cosmetic reasons, but I never did due to money. Now that I'm an adult, I doubt I will. My back teeth are just fine, but my top front 4 teeth are slightly crooked. I've got a gap. I'll live with it.

It seems that they are putting them on younger and younger children. How the heck can you put them on a kid when all their adult teeth aren't in yet?

Rachel is nearly 13, and has to wait another year at least and that will just be for her first consult with the orthodontist.

Rather her than me.

My 8 year old already has them... she has my jaw and they waited too long for me. I had a severe underbite. Once the teeth were straightened (and it looked like a graveyard) they needed to do an extensive surgery at age 18 to remove about a half-inch of the lower jaw and break the upper jaw in three places so the teeth would meet each other.

By starting my daughter now, they can control the growth of the upper and lower jaw so surgery won't be necessary and she'll end up with straight teeth and a correct bite pattern.

If it were just crooked teeth, like my roommate from college, you could wait until you are an adult. At 34 she's got them now to straighten her lower teeth. But if the problem includes the jaw, better to get it done early.

I'm editting to say she doesn't have a full set of braces - right now she's wearing an apparatus to keep her back molars from moving forward while she loses baby teeth.

Zim- that is one of the bits of info I learned yesterday. That they do it when the kids are younger because the jaw is not done forming!

never had them, but expect to hear that i probably need them. I hate the dentist so not a big fan of going. i swear that i had my wisdom teeth pulled out when i was younger , but they're back and pushing on my other teeth. The front of my mouth looks ok. the back is another thing!

My teeth were quite straight growing up so I never had braces. Now, a couple of my bottom, front ones are a little crooked, but I have much more important things to spend my money on at this point in my life.

I should have had them.  My lowers are fine, but I have a couple crooked ones.  Not the front tow, the ones next to them. I suppose I could get them now, but at almost 36 yrs old I just can't see the point.  It's not as if I run the risk of losing my career as a supermodel or anything.

I had a "permanent" retainer on behind my lower front teeth that started to come apart when I was 24. So I went back to my orthodondist after about 10 yrs and had him take it off. I also had him make me a top tooth retainer because it felt like my teeth were shifting.

Dude was all "well your bite is still off, we could break your jaw and reset that"...and I was all "I can chew just fine, thank you......go get your vacation to Tahiti money from someone else..."

Words you will never hear come out of a guy's mouth....

I cant see you anymore...you have a crooked tooth. Oh sure, you are a great cook...a fantastic kisser and have a great personality...but that bicuspid in the back is a deal breaker.

Really, it's true, Americans are now trained to get braces on their kids no matter what, even for pretty insignificantly crooked teeth. We can be so vane - what happened to the good old days when people looked forward to the days when their bunched up, rotted teeth would fall out and they could get that freaky set of false teeth to scare the grandkids!

Let me get this straight... Dude offered to break your jaw and honestly thought you would think it a good sounding idea? There is just something wrong there.
