Any junior veterinarians out there? (KEEP ALLY CAT & SPARKY AWAY FROM THIS THREAD!)

I just saw one of the weirdest things I've seen in a long time!

I took the dog out and was standing next to the house, when I turned to look at the house I was shocked to find a bird just below eye level about 10 inches from my face!

He's clinking to a phone wire that runs directly up and down, facing down. He's awake and alert, but almost looks like he can't move, although he hasn't even tried to flap his wings, he just moves his head and looks around.

His back left leg and wing look bloodied

What do I do!?!?!?!?!? I can't stand to just leave him there to die! But they'd probably think I was insane if I actually took him to the humane society or something.

Thoughts? Any one know anything about dealing with a wild bird? Is he a lost cause?

Call the Humane Society. They'll give you the number of an animal refuge that may take him.

One time my parents were tilling (gas powered tiller) their garden and found a litter of baby bunnies the hard way. A couple bunnies survived. The humane society gave us the number of an animal refuge place, but they said they had too many animals and they wouldn't take them!

I would still suggest trying though. Maybe your local people will be nicer than ours were.

riggs humane society LIVES for stuff like this. My friend Lauren at work is a wild animal caretaker volenteer on the weekends. I know that she would say call.

I wonder if his foot is caught between the cables. I see the cables are tied together right there. I bet if you spread the cables a bit and lifted him up, he could get out.

Send him to me..  will take good care of him

No really just get a box and put him in it with a little water dish (butter bowl lid) and a worm or 2 and maybe some bird seed, maybe a small piece of bread (because I don't know what he's hungry for) Put him in a nice shady safe from sparky spot. He will A: fly away when he's ready or B: Sparky gets lunch

Well Web, I hadn't seen your post, but I was out there checking on him and your scenario was dead on.

His left leg was stuck in the wires and had gotten all the way down right to the tie. I think the blood was all from him struggling to get out.

I got my neighbor involved and she held a cloth over him while I pulled the cables apart and lifted his leg out. Then he flew away!

WOO HOOOO!!!

Hopefully the bloodloss wasn't enough to kill him. He seemed pretty alert and peppy right up until he flew off, He was breathing really hard, but I probably would be too after all that!

Sorry AC & Sparks (GET IT?!?!?!?!) no supper for you two tonight!

JR, he probably won't be able to go too far, you should keep some birdseed out for him.

Yeah, I will.

We have a bird bath right in the back yard where he flew to the tree, so I'll put a bunch of bird seed in the middle (it's got like a feeder thingy).

Give him a chance to recouperate before travels to his next locale.

I thought you were having me for dinner. I didn't think you were HAVING me for dinner!

This isn't a good idea guys. Haven't you heard of the bird flu? I did take a business trip to Asia a few months back. And I've been feeling kind of light headed since I got back.

Maybe a nice Chicken instead?

Alright that's it. I've got to go start my daily exercising.

Clearly I need to be able to protect myself when I travel. I forget how desirable us Penguins can be to you humans!

Time to hit the exercise bike!

LATA!
