I have a friend that I don't understand. He gets caught up in the auctions and doesn't think about the fact that many times he's bidding more on a used item than what he could go buy it new for on the store shelf down the street. Also, we go through this all the time, he'll call or I.M. me: "Hey! look at this! This is only $13.00! Should I get it?". So, I go look at it and yes, it is only $13.00 but it still has 6 days left on the auction. "How many times have I told you, that just because it is $13.00 now, it is very unlikely you will win a $150.00 item for $13.00 when the acution ends. "Yeah, I know, but its only $13.00!!!"
I've bought probably 15-20 things on Ebay and sold one. I'm about to put my four string bass guitar on Ebay. I'm not having much luck locally.
I don't think I would risk buying anything on Ebay that losing that amount of money would cause a significant hardship on our finances.
Oh yeah, and I'm one of those guys that doesn't bid through the whole auction, then the last few seconds I place my one max bid.
That is another thing I keep trying to get my friend to understand. The only price that matters is the highest bid at the time the auction closes.
If there is something I see I'd like to have but wouldn't pay more than $xx for, I might put in a bid for that amount and then not worry about it. But, if it is something I really want, I'll wait until the last 10 seconds and put my max bid in. I figure bidding ahead of time, just gives the other bidders more time to decide if paying more than your bid is worth it. Really, I'm doing them a public service . . . the last second bid makes it easier on them because they don't have to decide if they want to bid more.

Yeah, I have a process for buying anything on eBay. I see what similar items have sold for, then I look at the buy it now items. If the buy it now has a good deal, I'll usually take that instead of worrying about bidding on something. But if I see the buy it nows are going for more than the bidded items, I'll wait until the last moment to bid.
Thanks for the Freecycle tip, Pip. For anyone else that's interested, it looks like it's freecycle.org, instead of .com.-- Edited by Molly at 08:10, 2006-06-01
Thanks Molly, sorry I didn't check before I posted...oops.
Ultimo.... I'm just too much of a coward to set one up... My partner has a pay-pal account....Admittedly he has had no probs....and he has it linked to an old (but live) bank account that he uses only for Paypal purposes, so it runs on empty most of the time.
I'm a last minute bidder too! At the last 20 seconds or so I put my high bid in and click refresh about a hundred times. It gives me kind of an adrenaline kick sometimes if its something I really want.

I am convinced a hearty portion of the bored rich folk in this world hang out on e-bay, look for the really really hot bidding wars, and then do a last second bid just for that "burn" factor. And they bid on something they don't really want or need; its just that they are addicted to the "burn"....

I'm not bored or rich, I'm just tryig to get the best deal I can when I buy something. I don't see the point in increasing the price of an item three days before the auction closes when the only bid that counts is the highest one at the time of close.
I bought my first laptop at ubid.com. They do it differently . . . on there, each item has an ending time, but the auction will not close until there have been no bids for 20 minutes. If two parties, keep bidding, the auction will not end until someone stops. Last time I looked at Ubid, they didn't have nearly the amount of stuff they had when I bought that laptop.
Hello. My name is Pambo and I am an Ebay addict. (Hello, Pambo...)
I have spent countless hours shopping on Ebay. My low point came recently when I spent over $1000 in one month on Ebay. (I got a bunch of really cool stuff!!!!)
I have had to go totally cold turkey because I can't use Ebay just a little. Today is my 23rd clean day.
