Here's my latest project. The job itself is not that big of a deal but the concept is pretty cool.
This guy about my age, had two casts of saddle horns made. One of them was customized to include his dad's livestock brand in the top of it.
He went to the farmstead where his dad grew up. The old barn is falling down, but he was able to pull a stud out of the wall. He had me turn two legs out of the old 2x4 stud and made them fit into these cast saddle horns to be used as canes or walking sticks.
He is going to give them to his dad for father's day. The cool part is that his dad's cane is made out of a stud from the barn where he grew up.
The most challenging thing for me was fitting the wood into the cast. They are irregular shaped inside and it was a little bit of a challenge to get a nice tight fit. Turning the leg itself was relatively easy. He is going to stain and finish them himself.
I just think that is a really nice gift he could give his dad.
Here is the cast saddle horn with the brand in it. The other one is just plain on top.
Here are the two canes side by side:
Here they are by a cut off piece of the old 2x4 that the wood came out of:
That is SOOOOOOOOOO cool Web! What a neat gift idea! Real sentimental value to it and yet useful!
I've given serious thought to using a cane. Not because I need one for walking, but there's SO many times I wish I had something to whack someone upside the head with!

Oh I so agree! Oh but I like Dylan's response too!

That which does not kill me postpones the inevitable.
These would make pretty good "whackers". The cast saddle horns are fairly heavy. If you held on to the bottom end of the cane, got a good swing, and connected to someone's head, it would do some serious damage.
I'm sure it would make an excellent wasband whacker.
