So, what's for lunch?

I just had a tuna on rye with some seedless purple grapes! How about you?

Heading back to the pool!

Nope - last year it was advertised on little cards at the restaurant for a few weeks prior... then they had balloons and such the day of... this time if it weren't for the website, you wouldn't have known there was anything special going on. Last year there were one or two little kids in cow costumes, this year we were it. But the cow puns and costumes are so much fun - I hope they do it up a little next year, just so we don't look THAT much like we escaped from the local asylum...

my husband and i have been doing the south beach diet for the past five weeks, so we had stuffed tomatos (stuffed with salmon salad -- we were out of tuna), and sugar free jello, and mozarella cheese stick.  oh yeah, and water & lemon.  not bad...

I sauteed some fresh mushrooms and onions, then when they were nice and browned added some egg whites, fat free cheese and threw it on an english muffin.

Not much of a lunch, but I'm trying to watch it

And only 150 calories, NO FAT, NO CHOLESTEROL!

Although I've always suspected egg whites have to have SOME cholesterol, I mean, the yolk is FULL of cholesterol, some of that has to spread into the whites right?

But of course!

Although I'm not a big believer in the carb thing.

Less food (just about anything is ok if you don't eat a lot of it) and more exercise = lost weight.

None the less I try to buy the lowfat breads and usually whole grain or wheat.

It's odd though, I bought italian low fat burger buns once because it was all they had. They had the exact same number of carbs as the wheat buns from the same manufacturer. Only 1 gram.

yes, exercise is very important.

i wasn't sold on the low carb thing either, but after reading the south beach diet book i learned that it's really about good carbs and good fats.  i was at a point where i was just disgusted and i knew i had to do something, because although i was excercising, i was also becoming a boredom eater and i had gained about 8 pounds in say five months...

the cover of the book says something like "loose belly fat first".  i actually have (yay!).  and i don't miss the starches...

At this point, there is so little that I can eat, I don't care whether or not it's good for me. I often have to choose eating something that's technically 'not good for you' or having something that's good for everyone else but contains corn. Starving to death is not my idea of a diet plan. So, I eat what I can and I exercise at least 3x a week.

corn is a no no in phase one of the south beach diet,

and very limited in phase two and three......

my husband has been taking something called ox-e-drops for his acid reflux and they have really helped him tremendously.  we actually started them for the dog because he has cronic ear infections, but after reading the testimonials, he thought he'd try it.  anyhow, if you have time to read, go to the website http://www.nzymes.com/product-ox-e-drops.htm and read some of the testimonials.  maybe it's something that will help you with some of your conditions...

Really? So what do they tell you not to eat? Just corn? Just corn and corn syrup? How about corn starch, corn oil, vegetable oil, xantham gum, dextrose, etc.? Does it give you any tips on how to eat without corn products? If so, I may need to pick up a book...

no corn anything.... even corn byproducts...  rather than veg oil, we've been using olive oil and olive oil spray.  i've just tried to make it a rule to stay away from corn as much as i can.  the way i understand it (simple minded) is that corn basically breaks down into sugar and sugar is evil....  in five weeks i've lost 10 lbs...

are you allergic to eggs?

Yep, I'm allergic to eggs too. So how do you shop? What type of bread do you use? Or, are you only allowed to have bread after you're allowed to have corn again? I've only found one type of organic bread that doesn't contain any corn products. Do you eat out? If so, where? I'm having a heck of a time eating no corn on a limited budget, so how do you do it?

phase one is to get rid of the cravings of starchy foods, therefore avoiding:  all high fat meats including dark meat chicken; non-reduced fat cheeses; ALL fruit; corn, beets, sweet potatoes, yams, white potatoes, NO ALCOHOL.  then in phase two you can start eating these again -- IN MODERATION -- i use the sb guide called good fats / good carbs.

i don't know what one would do about eggs because it's big on eggs

i can't aford to buy organic, so i do a lot of label reading.  we never have eaten out much, so i told my husband, if i'm gonna eat out, i'm breaking all the rules!

we eat a lot of vegetables and legumes and chicken.  snacks is what is the hard part for me because it says not to skip snacks -- breakfast -- snack -- lunch -- snack -- dinner.

i think one thing that really helps us is that almost every night of the week, we sit down as a family to dinner and eat very little fast food.

From what I'm reading, it's really not that strict when it comes to the corn thing, so I wouldn't be able to take the book's advice. Darn, that's what I was hoping for.

For example, it says during phase 1, lean lunch meat is okay. Very few lunch meats are packaged without corn starch or dextrose. Heck, half the spices you get from a chain grocery store have corn starch in them. Some cheeses, especially low fat American cheese, have corn oil or xantham gum. You get the point.

So for now, the only diet I'm going on is the Don't-eat-things-that-will-kill-me diet. I would kill for a piece of yellow cake with chocolate icing for my birthday.

that just so totally sucks!

don't eat lunch meat!  i've been cooking up chicken breast, dicing it and freezing it in meal size portions to put in whatever vegetable dish -- salad, stir fry etc...

i still don't know what you'd do about breakfast...

I would die without my eggs I don't know how you do it Molly!

I do only use the egg whites, but then I buy egg beaters and add a little of that just to get the color back

Man that sucks to be so limited in what you can eat! Expecially at your young age!

I usually have fruit or Grapenuts for breakfast. There's no way I could do the South Beach Diet. I couldn't live without fruit. And I don't really eat much meat, I don't really like the taste of it. So there's no way I could do plain chicken breasts all the time. How do you get any variety?
