ah dave, like anyone, I like to think my walls are an oasis from the city. Although this thought occured to me the other day when I was at the stove: I am not only cooking food in the kitchen, I am cooking food in the universe....

Yeah, I have a black thumb too. I think I've been doing okay this year though. I got on a I-need-to-grow-something kick. I've got my peace lily that hasn't died yet, and we grow catnip outside every summer. Well this year I added wildflowers to the catnip, and most of those are doing well except I think the catnip had a visitor who decided to crawl through the flowers. I also tried mint, but all of the leaves have brown dead spots on them. I'm wondering if it gets too much sun. Also, inside, a friend gave me some sort of vine plant (she just calls it Fred) that's a shoot off of the plant she has. She claims it's impossible to kill. Then finally, I a tiny rose plant on sale at Kroger, so I've got that on my shelf too. I know I'm going to kill it, but I'm going to try to keep it growing!

JD how the hell are you killing a PHILADENDRON? I too didn't have too much luck with plants but I think I have one of those and I forget to water it, it browns, I water it and it bounces back. I also have 2 peace Lilies that I do the same with most of the time. I had both of them in the same room at different windows. But I had to move one into another room to make room for the fish tank. After I did that them suckers started blooming and growing like crazy! I swear it was like they were having a sibling rivalry or something!

When I first moved into my current house, my mom gave me a cactus as a house warming gift. I had it a couple months and it was doing well. It was the middle of summer and very hot outside, so I thought I'd set it out in the sun for a while. SOMEONE STOLE IT! It was just a tiny cactus, and someone stole it!

cactus are hard to keep alive, your better of just misting them with a spray bottle. Its very easy to overwater them.

JD, plastic plants NEVER die and they look so real nowadays almost no one knows If you feel guilty about having "fake" plants do what I do and mix real ones and fake ones together.

After tech school, I moved four hours from home to take a job. I was living in a walk-out basement apartment. I decided I wanted something alive in there with me so I bought a little philadendron plant. The lady at the store said they were easy to take care of.

I knew it would vine so I wanted a hanger for it. Just as a fun little project, I made it so it hangs from the ceiling on wooden chain links. It's got about 4 big 6" links with a shelf suspended below that by three peices of rope. Kind of rustic looking, but I thought it was cool.

That plant did great, I just kept pointing the growing end back up into the hanger and it got really full and all woven around the hanger and into the chain.

I think I repotted the thing once but its still going great. This plant has lived with me about a year longer than my wife has and that will be 19 years next week. The problem is that it is hanging in the corner of the bathroom over the tub. We're very close to remodeling the bathroom now and will be putting a shower in. The plant won't be able to stay there any longer. My wife says it can't be anywhere else in the house so it's gotta go after all these years.

That's not right in my opinion. The plant isn't dead.

Take it to to the shop with you! You can't get rid of that plant! Is she jealous of a plant?

Web. You might have to take a stand here!

"Look woman! I've known this plant longer than I've known you! Don't ask me to choose! Could you live with having lost a popularity contest to a plant!!!"

Or better yet, if she gets to completely veto your plant, then you should demand that you get to veto one thing of hers out of the house.

Anything come to mind that you'd carry out to the trash cans for her?

Its nothing like that. She just doesn't want it hanging anywhere else in the house.

That's what she told me, "you can take it out to the shop" but it just wouldn't work here with the temperature extremes, dust, etc.

I think the issue is the hanger more than the plant itself because she said something about maybe trying to getting a slip off of it and starting it over in a different kind of pot.

Can you hang it back in the bathroom after you remodel it? It seems unreasonable to get rid of a plant just because of the pot!

No, it can't stay in the bathroom because the only place for it is over the tub. There's no shower in that bathroom now, just the tub so it is ok there. After we remodel, if we put it back where it was, it would be hanging inside the shower.

That's a good idea Woo, I'll just leave it on your door step.

My Dad tried and tried for years to make this bush grow in the corner of the patio. He tried everything he could think of but nothing worked. One night about 10:30 he looked out and there stood my brother swaying back and fourth peeing in the bush. He didn't want to make any noise when he got home drunk so he just did his thing out there for 2 or 3 years. I thought the old man was going to make him eat that bush.

yes its dying. I probably over-watered it. it looked thirsty and dying, so I watered it and it didn't like that either.

Those air plants are hard to keep alive. I haven't known anyone to be able to keep those things alive. I think they require a lot more maintenance than advertised.
