VH1 Classic to rebroadcast MTV's first day on August 1

on August 1st, and encoring on August 5th, from 12:01 am to 11:59 PM, VH1 Classic will be rebroadcasting the first 24 hours of MTV to mark the 25th anniversary of MTV's launch on August 1, 1981.   Get out your DVR's and VCR's because this will definately be a keeper.

Some loser on another board was whining that "great, another excuse to pimp out the 80's",  well, duh!  VH1 Classic is supposed to be a reflection of the glory days of MTV, and when was that, the 80's?  Better that than Eminem and Britney on VH1 Classic.

I know. MTV stopped playing videos years ago!

Now the only station I like is VH-1 Classics. They're pretty much all music videos all the time still.

I wish MTV would go under new ownership, preferrably somebody who cares about the MUSIC.

If I became the new owner of MTV, I'd cancel all the reality crap, get rid of TRL (which contributes to the dumbing down of younger peoples musical tastes) and start fresh, go back to a music-oriented programming.    There are so many artists that deserve to be heart but won't because MTV would rather air Laguna Beach.

thanks so much for sharing. i agree with you 100% that MTV should go back to the basics. while I was only in kindergarten in 1980 i knew a good thing when I heard it all back then.  WOuldn't it be neat if the highlights of certain years from MTV was available for purchase?  Does anyone know if you could buy any of that?

those early days and early vids were awesome! Radio, Radio by Elvis, Specials "Ghost Town"....do you remember the long promos with the rocket ship and the man on the moon coverage?? I was convinced they were rewinding the video tape with all the videos on it during these breaks....

There's a website you gotta go to and sign the peitition then! I forget the name, something like Wisconsinites for choice or something, but we're trying to force competition in the market and bring ala carte cable to town!

This will be great for me to ! I used to record the Top 20 video countdown with Adam Curry along with Club MTV with Downtown Julie Brown ( Wubba Wubba Wubba). Does anyone remember when they used to do those contests on MTV in the early days? I remember one that was Grand Slam Video Challenge. They pitted 32 videos against each other and viewers called in to vote for thier fav. The winner moved on to another winner until it came to 2 and the winner was declared the Grand Slam Video of all time. One Year by a margin of 30 votes. Skid Rows " I Remember You" beat Warrants Uncle Toms Cabin i think

ahhhhhhh the good old days. I used to record all the MTV movie awards and i think I still have some

I don't remember that but it sounds soooo like MTV back in the day.

I saw Martha Quinn, probably on VH1 classic, maybe a year ago talking about back in the day. She looked twice as beautiful as she was back in her early 80s MTV days. Naturally too.

I am a HUGE original MTV fan. It's the reason I got a VCR (First on my block to have one.) $500 back then - isn't that crazy?!

I have some old MTV shirts, including the special 1983 MTV presents the Police Synchronicity Tour one, some original MTV buttons - Halloween one, Birthday one. Remember when their birthday was a big deal, and they'd have special guests stopping by all day? I used to try & stay up for the full 24 hours to celebrate with them. (I guess I wasn't the most social teenager!)

Also have a letter from Alan Hunter, and an autographed picture of Martha Quinn, because she read my trivia question on the air.

I used to look soooooooooooooo forward to the "WORLD DEBUT VIDEO'S".

For really big releases they'd play the video every hour. I must have seen every airing of Prince's "Raspberry Beret" when they played it every hour for 24 hours

Actually, it's "World Premiere Videos". I used to tape them, and write the date down, because to me that was such a special moment. (Dork!!!)

I was there when they did that for Authority Song for JCM. And lo and behold we are broadcasting Rumble Seat right now.

My dad liked 2 songs I know of from the 80's- Born in the USA and Authority Song. I remember him not mindin the MTV when those were on.
