The In My Neighborhood Thread....

Hey!

Here's a thread to let us in on your neighborhood news and gossip!!

In my neighborhood......

I am pleased as PUNCH that the atm on a convenient corner for me has switched over to my banks atm!!! All service fees GONE! I used to drive a mile out of my way to use my banks atm. I no longer have too! This atm is right by the greasy spoon and beer depot, on my way to work or to the studio, and right before turning to head to the ballpark or downtown. PERFECT!!

BUT

The sign to Gillies Custard is covered up in a tarp!! And all mention of that name has been removed from the building! Closing down!?!?!? Changing owners!?!??! Dear god, I will die if I can't have my monthly fudge mallow mint sundae!!!!!

AND

This kid Justin, who moved into my old apartment down the hall, sure has a lot of buddies over always. Its only a 1 bedroom apt. I know Justin likes the ladies, but I am wondering if he's not having one or two buddies crash on his couches and they split the rent?

Stay Tuned....

JD, does he have a lot of people coming and going? If so, I'd guess that he's probably just selling something illegal...

Here, the next couple of weekends are moving weekends. We've got a new neighbor on our east side, and I think we'll get a new neighbor on the other side as well. The new guy seems cool. He's a grad student, like 50% of the people in our complex.

nah Mz, they all same to be put. Even on nice sunny days, always indoors. I would not be suprised if they are doing illegal things in there.

How ironic that you posted this. Several minutes after I read it, there was a knock from inside my garage door. My lady neighbor was knocking- the one who had not EVER spoke to me in one and half years- the one who will not even acknowledge Emily. They are moving and rumor has it that they are getting a divorce cause she is a drunk. Well everybody has been talking about her going to random houses and asking for alcohol or a ride somewhere. Monday I saw her walking back in the morning with some wine from Walmart- it was already 90 and she was walking and sweating bad. Anyway- now I have my own story- she told me that she got in a fight with her hubby and would I take her to the store to get some wine cause her husband got rid of her car. I told her no that E had been in an accident and she had the friggen nerve to say- well I do not know what to do I really don't know anyone around here. Well it is not my fault you have snubbed the neighbors for five years Plus if my hubby answered the door and she asked him- I might have had to kick her butt

Oh yeah and at the party today my other neighbors lost their daughter for a bit- she is E's age and they both thought the other had her! Scary at a water park!

I feel bad for her- I just do not understand how people let alcohol run/ruin their lives like that.

when we were kids we had a neighborhood drunk couple too. Never saw the guy. They had a dog named "Tip" who would always run away and she'd wander the neighborhood for hours and hours looking for that dog.....they used to just throw their leftover food out the back door for the dog to eat...

I'm fairly confident that Kevin and I are the talk of our neighborhood.  Screw 'em.

Our next door neighbor Bryant just got the most adorable puppy.  He's a 9 week old pit bull.  I know, I know... but you can't convince me that Taz has a mean bone in that little body.  He is just as sweet as can be. I'm befriending him so I will be considered part of his pack.   The bad news is that our city government is looking to vote in a pit bull ban.  I gather the way the ordinance is written, that Bryant will be allowed to keep Taz, but after the first of the year other people will not be allowed to get new pit bull pets.

2 policemen earlier today were talking to the people who live at the other end of the street. their house is just in really shabby condition, its like they are bums. the yard looks like a dump. I wonder if someone finally complained about them. I don't think they rent either, they own.

Speaking of dogs, we've got a neightbor that has a husky puppy. It is so adorable yet beautiful! I love it when our neighbors have puppies, when they walk past our house, we always pet the puppy, and it always loves us. I love having a neighbor dog start wagging his tail and get all excited to see me as they walk past, just for a pat on the head.

We also have some neighbors whose dogs we hate. These dogs never stop barking, and they are small yippy dogs. Our friends used to live next door to these people, and the dogs would just bark incessantly when the owners were out. It was very annoying.

Our 90 year old neighbor passed away last week. I didn't really know him, he stayed in his house most the time, but my hubby knew him from when he (my hubby) was a maintenence man for a while.

Speaking of maintenence men, I don't like these new guys. The guys my hubby worked with were always polite and smiled at me, and said hi when I passed, etc. Just friendly. So you know that it's okay for these guys to be in your house to fix something. These new guys won't even make eye contact. Last winter, my hubby cleaned all the snow off my car, and when I went out to leave, the maintenence guy was blowing the snow from the sidewalk right onto my car!!

But one thing I love is all the music students we have around here. On a nice, open-the-windows kind of day, I can hear them practicing. We've got 2 french horn players, a trombone player, an opera singer, a piano player, a guitar player, and possibly even more.

we used to have a bagpipe player in the neighborhood, lol he lasted 2 months, tops!

there is this kid named d (actually I am not too sure he's a kid anymore he just pretends to be...) who does techno music. thankfully not here in the apartments! I heard a recording of his stuff once, and it was like little pings and the hyper-beating of soda cans with pencils.....real a.m. radio sound quality.....

anyways I was looking out my window before and d and a buddy were bringing in a metal brief case- that will either be techno music equipment or a case of pills, I am betting....

ah just a couple of white chicks yellin with a finger in eachothers face. the one had a dog, the other had a car door open street side from her fast exit to confront. from this distance I could not tell if it was high school kids, or 30 yr olds. But what resonates, is the white girl ghetto attitude.  I am guessing it must be over some guy. His tattoos must be the bomb. Or his crack.

case closed!

Since I was talking about neighbors... First, a little bit about where I live. There's 4 long buildings, each with about 23 townhouses. Between the buildings is a long strip of yard. The lease lets you have 2 animals per apartment, no size restriction, so there's lots of dogs. And we have a Bark Park, which used to be a tennis court, but they got tired of taking care of it, so they painted it and put some doggy toys and trick stuff in it. So there's someplace to take dogs and let them off their leash and just run around.

The neighbors in the very first couple houses are always congregating outside. They're right by the mailboxes, so they have some extra porch space, so they've got a big outdoor table (the type that can have an umbrella in the middle). They're always outside having barbecues and such, and everyone is always welcome to stop by.

Then there's the Bark Park bunch, who take their dogs to play together in the park. There's one couple that live all the way down towards end of the second building who also have a bar in their living room and always invite us down for vodka drinks.

Also in the second building, but right across from us (we're in the 3rd building, about 6 doors down) is Nate and Courtney, the trombone player and opera singer. Nate teaches middle school band, helps out in the jazz department at IU, and the Nate Sutton Quintet featuring Courtney Crouse often play some mean jazz at Tutto Bene, the wine bar. Courtney is currently in the doctorate program at IU. They have a fuzzy cool black and white cat named Miles.

2 doors up from us are our California neighbors, Christy, George, and Zippy. Christy often takes Zippy (a tortoise) out into the yard between the 2nd and 3rd building while she studies. I'm not exactly sure what she's studying, but it's something about homeland security or national defense I think. Zippy is the talk of the neighborhood.

2 doors down from us are Dave and Matt. It used to be just Dave and his dog (and I forget her name now), but he ended up giving his dog to his parents. The dog was getting old, and Dave works long hours at the IU library (notice a theme here yet?), so he wanted her to have more care. Then he got a roommate, Matt. Matt's the hot neighbor from North Dakota who grills out the coldest day of the year. Matt is a composer who has got his music picked up by several groups across the country. He's also studying at IU.

Next door to Matt and Dave is the ex-Marine. I mentioned him earlier, he's a really cool guy.

Then a few more doors down is George who's from the Netherlands, I think (or somewhere around there). He's also a really cool guy. We don't get a chance to hang out with him much, but he'll always carry on a brief conversation when you pass him. He's also pretty good looking, and seems to have a new girl on his arm.

And then across from us, in the 4th building, is a couple who have a dog and a cat and a couple birds. They'll put a baby gate up and prop their screen door open so they can sit outside, the dog can sit in the doorway, the cat will come outside and lay on the pavement, and they'll even bring the bird cage out.

And finally, I think we just got a couple new neighbors. It appears a couple morning doves are building a nest in the overhang about 20 feet away. The cats are currently glued to the window, watching them fly back and forth.

Oh I am so happy you found this thread again! I forgot what it was called. I thought about it yesterday!

In my neighborhood, right now, this guy dave is having trouble shutting off a honking car alarm. I wonder if he bought a used car and is figuring it out..

there has also been a car tire lying on the grass near the corner all week. I wonder whattup with that....

Otherwise I am pleased that it is 7 pm and its still kinda light out.smile

Thanks! Yeah, it is a pretty cool neighborhood. It's got it's downsides, the biggest being that you can't park in front of your apartment. But it ends up being good after all, because I have to walk down the sidewalk with my neighbors.

Oh, that reminds me, I forgot some neighbors. A little father down from us, there's a single mom and her two kids. She makes these kids do everything, it's great! She makes them do laundry, she sends them to the CVS across the street to pick stuff up, in winter she sends them out to warm up the car in the mornings. And these kids are great, they're respectful, yet they're still kids. One time, they were bouncing a tennis ball off of the building in the parking lot when I was walking to my car. Well, they bounced it too hard one time, and it went over their heads and hit someone's car (didn't do any damage). They gave me a terrified look and said, "Is that your car?" I laughed, pointed to the car next to it, and said, "No, THAT's my car." They looked so relieved!

Sounds like a mom who knows how to bring up her kids the right way!  Chores never hurt a kid....it teaches them to be self-sufficient one day, and also what it means to be part of a family by contributing to the family.  And some day when they have kids of their own, they'll raise them the same way, making more future good neighbors and responsible adults.  smile

Yeah, she's a good mom. And she's a single mom, and a minority, and it's nice to see someone not fitting the stereotype. I really like her and her kids.

Let's see.

In my neighborhood . . .

Next door going up the hill, the house is empty as of the last few days. They are still moving, but must be living in their new house. We've had lots of trouble with their kids in the past throwing rocks at our house, etc. I own't miss them. Hopefully we will get someone nice move in there. Next from there is the pastor of a church (not my church). They don't come out much although I've talked to him a few times and he's a nice guy. Next from them is a guy that I went to school with. We shared a locker from 7th - 12th grades and roomed together at tech school.

Next door down the hill, is a widdow. Her husband died a few years ago. He was a grumpy ol' guy. The kind of guy that would only talk to us to tell us what we were doing wrong. She has really became more friendly since he's been gone. Warm evenings when she's sitting on her front porch, we will go over and chat for a few minutes . . . she's lonely. Next to her is a widower . . . another elderly man but we don't know all that well.

Straight across the street is a family that doesn't like us. That came from the lady that used to live next to them. The trouble maker and family have moved out, and since then we've found out that she was pretty much making up stories and playing the "they said this about you" and "they said that about you" between us. I guess this must have just been a hobby of hers. Across the street and up the hill is the superintendent of schools. They are nice and have two black labs that we sometimes watch for them when they are gone. Up the hill from them is a lady and two girls that is recently divorced. The dad just moved out this winter. He was a grade behind me in school. In the trouble maker's old place is a younger couple that we don't know very well. He is just the kind of guy that won't say anything. He won't even look up when we are both at our mailboxes at the same time. They have a little girl that had some heart trouble when she was born but she's doing great now . . . a little cutie. Down the hill from them is a rental house. There are people coming and going from there all the time that we don't even know who is there this week.

Thats what our neighborhood looks like. smile.gif

SInce it's spring and getting warm now, I'm looking fr=orward to finding out what everyone in my neighborhood is up to. I hardly see anyone over the winter. We've had a lot of houses for sale, so maybe some new neighbors to meet.

I am in the process of moving to a new neighborhood! It is a totally different culture there so it should be interesting. I did notice someething funny that results from living closer to the stadium that was kinda funny. When a Brewers game is on, a lot of people park in my neighborhood to avoid the fees and parking chaos at the stadium. The fans have their own unique rituals in preparing for the walk to the game. One guy parked outside my place and loaded up on packs of cigarettes. He looked like he was preparing for battle! With a sigh of resignation, he finally got out of the car an lit up a smoke for the long walk. The drama of it was funny. Another fan must have felt he needed to represent. He started out in a Brewers t-shirt and jeans but proceeded to layer himself with Brewers apparel. A long-sleeve shirt, a cap, a jersey, a water bottle...all sporting the Brewers emblem. This is going to be entertaining! smile

Ok, my neighborhood. Let's see.

I live on a corner lot. Here are my neighbors...

Directly in front (across the street) the 50 something Mom who has two or three adult kids living it home. Pretty sure they deal drugs outta the house based on how much traffic comes and goes until the wee hours of the morning. Not complaining too much though because the 20 somthing girl washes her car obsessively in the summer while wearing a very skimpy bikini. This is always a good time for me to wash my windows or mow the lawn biggrin.gif

To my left is the absentee landlord of a duplex. Upstairs is his friend who I'm not entirely convinced isn't a mute, as I've never heard him speak in two years. Downstairs is your common white trash. Little by little, as his cat has destroyed the $12 mini-blinds that covered the windows, he's opted to replace them with various colored blankets. He's in charge of shoveling the snow, but usually opts to just let mother nature take care of it when June rolls around.  (the owner had a new roof put on a few years ago, he went with the cheapest roofer he could find.  To this day there is one of those brackets they put up there to stand on.  You know the ones, a really long (maybe 8 foot) two by four with big ugly brackets on each side to let people stand on the roof.  The idiot is too lazy to bring it down and too stupid to call the company that left it.  Now every winter snow and ice for a nice big pile above it.  Besides that it looks ridiculous.)

To the right of me (again, across the street) is the real winner of the bunch. A supposed construction company is run out of the house, but the guy who lives there looks like a total idiot. He was constantly chasing down his three HUGE dogs that would always break loose after barking incessantly at whoever walked by. He eventually build them a chain-link fenced area, which has helped keep them from leaving dog logs all over his yard (which he NEVER cleaned up).

He's been known to leave his broken down pickup trucks on the lawn for months at a time, and rather than pay the $99 a year for a parking permit would just pull his regular truck up onto his lawn. Last year he finally put in a cement slab for it.

Directly behind me are the young couple who moved in two years ago and prompty replaced all their lawn with rocks and wildflowers. Not a section! Not a part! ALL OF IT! The ENTIRE lawn! Apparantly lawn-mowing is not something they enjoy. They had allowed their mother to live upstairs, but after a short period of time decided they didn't like the neighborhood and bought a place in a ritzy suburb. Nearly a year of the house being on the market with no bids (perhaps the badlands for a front yard wasn't helping?) they decided to just let their mother live there.

Top all this off with the fact that two years ago they closed down the old age home up the block and reopened it as a "come n' go" home for the mentally challenged and you can see why my neighborhood is SO much fun to live in! clap.gif

Won't you be, Won't you be, PLEASE WON'T YOU BE, my.... neighbor!?

Actually, when we buy a house, that's something we've considered doing.  Brian refuses to mow grass at his own house, so I'd have to do it, and with my reputation for household chores, we'd probably have at least foot high grass before I'd mow it.

Refuses to mow grass at his OWN house?  Where else would he mow it?

Usually it's the other way around and you refuse to mow grass when you rent.

Did he have to work for awhile as a landscaper or something?  Something that turned him against lawn mowing?
