Miami Vice: What's the point?

Ok, so I don't get it. This weeks new Number One Movie at the box office is Miami Vice.

From what I've read, this movie has nothing to do with the TV show other than the title and the character names.

Russell Crowe is not even TRYING to act like Don Johnson. Jamie Foxx is not even trying to act like Phillip Michael Thomas.

They're not wearing the clothes, they're not wearing the hair.

Why name the Movie Miami Vice? It's just a NEW cop movie set in Miami, it seems to have no connection of any kind to the classic TV show (again, other than the names)

Is there a difference really?

One Hollywood bad boy who likes look discheveled to enhance his image or the other, what's the difference?

to some there IS a difference. I'm one of the few who are not ga-ga over one or both of them.

I haven't seen it, but one of the reasons I wasn't going to see it was because I couldn't imagine it being that good. You can't recreate those shows in a movie and do it any justice, I think. Good example - Dukes of Hazard. I did not like it. My son loved it, but he's 11, has hit puberty and bases his like of the movie solely on Jessica Simpson and a 69 Charger, not substance.

Whoa, I just read what I wrote. I guess expecting Dukes of Hazard to have substance is like looking for emmy nominations in a porno.

my husband hates colin farrell!  he's not bad in the looks department -- yummy

 Colin Farrell

(i like the bad boys), but i think he over uses the "f" word, so that turns me off.  i would have really liked alexander except that the dang music was so loud i couldn't hear the dialogue.

hollywood is hurting for something worth putting on film if they have to keep putting out re-makes and spin off's from retro tv!

boring......

I don't care for movie adaptations of TV shows.    If you're going to do it, why not bring back the original cast members?   Sometimes the actors are 15-25 years older but at least they're the people you recognize in the part.   Granted, Don and Phillip are pushing 60 at this point, but at least they are what you expect when you think of Crockett and Tubbs.

One thing (the only thing?) I like about these are that it's a surefire way to get some seasons of the show out on DVD, usually one right around the time the movie hits theaters and the next season around the time the DVD comes out.   Hell, I'm hoping we'll get a new Charlie's Angels movie, maybe then we'll be able to finish the last two seasons off on DVD.

That's what I was thinking too Anf. But instead they just repackaged seasons one and two in a two-fer pack and reissued it.

I'm afraid they're not gonna release the remaining seasons of Vice because it didn't sell well enough

I've been waiting four years for season 3 of Mad About You!

       I agree with JD , it's A , the money.

throw 2 " hollywood hunks " in a fast car , mix in some  explosions and a girls butt and you have a receipe for sucsess with the 13- 30 year olds.

now they don't even have to come up with a news or titles , just use something the kids havent heard before , don't have to worry about the adults cause we don't go to movies anymore cause it's always the same ole  2 guys / car / explosion / butt/ lack of a plot and acting skills crap that passes for " art "

the main problem with Miami Vice is not sales, but the music rights issue.  That has been the holdup for why The Wonder Years and WKRP have yet to come out on DVD, it costs so much and is taking so long to do all the appropriate negotiations.   I read an article saying that Miami Vice is Universal's #1 selling show on DVD, which means season 3 is a question of "when", not "if".   My guess is that we'll see the third season on DVD around Christmastime to coincide with the DVD release of the movie.

I hope so. I knew music was holding up WKRP, but hadn't considered it for Vice since they already got two season out I figured they had that covered.

I wonder what the hell is holding up Family Ties!!!

I agree about Family Ties, I want that.   At least Melrose Place and Simon And Simon are both >>FINALLY<< coming out on DVD this fall.   Family Ties, One Day At A Time, Ally McBeal and Maude (which is supposed to come out later this year, Bea Arthur recorded a commentary already) are now the only sets I've been wanting that still haven't been released.

Lee Majors fan, eh?

Six Million Dollar Man and Bionic Woman are both in rights hell keeping them from coming out in America for the time being,  but I have heard rumors about Fall Guy coming out in the next 6-8 months (I work for a TV-DVD website, so I know a lot of this stuff, lol)

Hey Anf, you don't work for tvshowsondvd.com do you?

That's my favorite site for this info.
