Life in The Ghetto Thread

UPDATE: No damage from oil spill

No serious environmental damage resulted after a group of men emptied about 100 gallons of heating oil into a north side street this morning while trying to steal a tank they hoped to convert into a barbecue, said Scott Ferguson, spills coordinator for the state Department of Natural Resources.

He said DNR staff were able to catch the heating oil in three large basins before it ran into the Milwaukee River, preventing a potential fish kill.

Workers from the city Department of Public Works arrived on the scene near N. 31st and Center streets around noon.

They used sand to soak up the oil from the street and a vacuum to suck out any oil that may have gotten into the sewer basins.

The cleanup took about an hour, said Cecilia Gilbert, a department spokeswoman.

Some men in a pickup truck pulled up next to the building Friday morning, Ferguson said. The 275-gallon heating oil tank wasn't full but was still too heavy for the men to carry away, so they punctured it to drain some of its contents.

"It's quite common for people to dump oil in alleys around the city," said Ferguson, who's seen similar incidents in his six years as spills coordinator. "But it's not often that people try to dump whole tanks."

Milwaukee police are investigating the matter.

And you think Chicagoans/Illinoisans are bad? Hey- does anyone remember hearing about how all those people on a big boat on the Chicago River got feces/urine (lots of it) dumped on their heads by the RV of the Dave Matthews band?  That happened under a bridge not too far from my work.

I would've just jumped in the River.

People who ruin the env't so blatantly SUCK.

Speaking of the Ghetto JD.

With all those darn Cubbie fans clogging up the freeway on Thursday (it was BAD, cars not moving AT ALL for about 7 miles!) I decided I had to take another route.

With most of the bridges out down there because of the M-Change project I wound up cutting through the ghetto.

OH MY GOODNESS! What a COMPLETELY different world! I swear I almost hit 3 crack heads with my car! They're just walking aimlessly through the street looking like they have no idea where they are!

All the windows are either shattered, boarded up or have bars over them. No ones lawn has been cut all summer, if you can call them lawns, they're more like weed farms.

Then you get to 60'th street and it's like there's an invisible wall, on one side is hell and on the other side is a normal, decent neighborhood.

Girl charged in shooting of 15-year-old

A 17-year-old girl faces a charge of homicide by negligent handling of a dangerous weapon in the accidental shooting of a teenage boy July 30.

According to a criminal complaint filed this week: Shawntavia Andrews of Milwaukee told police the gun went off when she tried to take it away from Dyonne Bowman, 15. Andrews told police several versions of what happened, each time saying the shooting was an accident. At first, she said she tried to take the gun from her friend, who was playing with it in her living room, because she had seen the weapon go off earlier while someone cleaned it. Later, she said she snatched the gun from Bowman and was waving it around when he tried to take the weapon from her and she accidentally pulled the trigger.

If convicted, Andrews would face a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a fine of $25,000.

Man charged in shooting death

A 50-year-old Milwaukee man has been charged with first-degree intentional homicide while armed in the Aug. 2 fatal shooting of Glenn Morgan Jr. According to a criminal complaint, R.B. Smith told police he shot Morgan after repeatedly telling him to leave from outside a home in the 5000 block of N. 47th St. Smith said he was visiting in the area around 9:20 p.m. when he heard Morgan and another man arguing outside. He said he saw Morgan push the other man and then told him to leave, the complaint says.

Less than an hour later, Smith went back outside and saw Morgan again, the complaint says. Smith said he again told him to leave, and that when Morgan cursed at him and held out his right arm, he panicked and fired at least twice, according to the complaint.

If convicted, Smith would face a maximum penalty of life in prison.

Froedtert Memorial Lutheran Hospital in Wauwatosa

A swell sounding title for "The hospital we send the uninsured, the druggies, the gang bangers, the hookers and anyone else that has no money!"

Authorities seek robbers posing as police officers

Milwaukee police are looking for two robbers posing as police officers.

Three incidents occurred between Thursday and Sunday, said Anne E. Schwartz, department spokeswoman.

The middle-aged robbers come to a victim's door and say they are construction company owners offering jobs. Once inside, they say they are officers investigating a crime, Schwartz said. Then they rob the residents, she said.

Actually, I've heard and seen it all in Chicago- so not much phases me. I've driven through some pretty rough spots, but here at least I know where I'm at and how to get out of it. Nothing worse than feeling lost in hell.

Wasn't Milwaukee where a bunch of people like jumped and beat the living crap out of some guy on the street for no reason one day? I remeber thinking that sucked....

I really do hate this city. I wanted to vomit driving through the hood yesterday. And it's not THAT far from here! Maybe 5 miles. Not enough distance for my taste!

We have several here too. The police and city are cracking down on several neighborhoods- doing sweeps, tearing down abandoned homes and fining people for unkept yards. But until these people get better jobs and want more for themselves- it won't last. Also, they do not know better, so they settle. I am sooo blessed! There was a time for seven years that I lived in the back of a ghetto. I was not bothered, but I hated it. I had one good neighbor though and I just stayed inside. I stayed there to put my self through school. BUT I knew that it was not permanent and I knew life was better.

That's just it. What's a crack down gonna do? They gotta live somewhere. Part of me is glad they all live together in their crap hole area of the city. But it's actually frightening driving through there man!

I'm not kidding, so many of the people on the street were CLEARLY on something as they walked around.

There's bad stuff everywhere I guess. Especially the meth labs they find in the million dollar homes just blows my mind. In a suburb south of Chicago they found a meth lab in a really - really nice house. Inside were kids living in filth, feces, no food, health hazzard, etc. And this mansion was so huge and the neighbors were all shocked. Makes ya wonder......

Yeah, you're going to have that in any big city. When we moved away from South Bend, they were trying to shut down all the bars in the red light district by giving them a curfew of 11pm. Seriously, no bar in the bad side of town was allowed to be open after 11. Personally, I'd rather have these people in the bar than out on the street!

Anybody a fan of the TV show COPS?  On one of the many shows done here in the KC area, the best excuse I ever heard for murder was on an episode in Kansas City, Kansas. A rather large lady was being arrested for shooting her husband.  Her reason as stated on camera for the world to hear, "I kills him cuz I loves him."  You just can't argue logic like that.

Wow- that's crazy! I heard that COPS won't air episodes from your city in your city. I'm in the Chgo area so I'll I gets to see on COPS is East or West Coast stuff...and basically everything in between (accept Chicago).

I bet it's because too many people might recognize their neighbors and want to move the hell away after they see what's really going on around them.
