The first day of school

So have any stories to share? Traditions maybe? I do not remember anything in my youth, but for the boy I took his picture every first day in the same chair so we could see how he had grown. I will have to do the same for E it is neat to see the progression. I, too, will probably cry when she starts. The boy starts high school next week, I might cry then too, but only cause it means I am old!

Yup- first day of school every year, we had to dress up & our mom would take a picture of us before we got onto the bus.

Also, in grammar school, we didn't have yearbooks, so my mom would get me an autograph book, which I would have my teachers & fellow students sign at the end of the year.  I'm so glad she did that - it's nice to look back on them.

I do not remember that far back I do know that I started 1st grade when I was five. I was always the youngest one in my class and last to do everything- license comes to mind. But my first grade teacher I remember- she was the most evil nun I had ever met. Thinking back now, she obviously was too old to be teaching and she was gone the following year, but she was MEAN and made us be mean to certain students. Some of those kids are probably still scarred. I remember one kid smelt like poop all the time and one time he took something that did not belong him to him ( I can't remember what), but anyway we had to call him Robber Skunk His real name was Robert.

It seemed to go ok. He was tired and crashed as soon as he got home. Typical boy, recess was best.

Only one incident, another boy was touching his back when they were in line and that was against the rules so he had to tell the teacher to have him stop. Such trauma.

Well, I did go to a Catholic grade school for eight years. Like Ruby, same kids every year, moving up through the grades together.

And like in the Blues Brothers, I did have a few fat penguins smack my knuckles with a yardstick

I went to a one room country school until 7th grade.

I had one classmate in Kindergarten, but he went to town school for 1st grade. I was the only one in my grade 1st - 6th. Competition was weak.

my first grade teacher is now the mayor of wauwatosa, wi....which is sort of like a suburb of milwaukee, but smack dab in the middle of milwaukee county....sorta weird to try and explain, not quite sure I get it myself.....

she is really a neat person. we run into eachother at the grocery store all the time. About 8 yrs ago I was there and she came up to me, I bet I had not seen her in 15 yrs before that and said hi.....I didn't recognize her at first until I really looked at her. oh that was great. big hug "who's that guy gettin hugged by the mayor????" LOL

she did. she is amazing that way. she lives real close to my aunt and uncle and knows them, so in a way she always would ask about me, my bro, my folks and stuff, and then we'd hear how she was.

but yea she must have photographic memory tho. "how was school, you were studying english and technical writing.....?" lol stuff about me even I don't remember. I think I was one of her faves tho....

yep! I sure was!

I remember I used to look out the gradeschool window and see the younger kids outside in the sun riding their big wheels, and I saw that I had 8 more years inside this big ugly building, forced to learn, to behave and I would just start bawling! I was growing up and did not like it!!

lol some 30 yrs later I am still right!!!

yep. we sure do. the forum was a brilliant idea. once we could meet some of the listeners out there, get to know them, it was awesome! they weren't just numbers and stats anymore, but real people! I doubt we'd even still be at it anymore without the forum! and its the forum folks that motivate us to keep on kickin it up a notch to the next level!
