Right Song, Wrong Words

The local Milwaukee Newspaper is interested in mis-heard lyrics from popular songs! I know we have a thread about that in here somewhere. Or send yours in to these guys, maybe mention Freeze Frame Radio......

Right song, wrong words?

Posted: Aug. 22, 2006

You, of course, remember that Paul McCartney/Stevie Wonder chestnut "Emily and Ivory."

And that Andrew Lloyd Webber classic "Don't Cry for Me, Marge and Tina."

Who can forget that Beatles' evergreen "She's Got a Tick in Her Eye"? Then there's Chaka Khan's romantic favorite, "Climb Every Woman."

As you've probably figured out by now, we're quoting misheard lyrics. The phenomenon of messed up and misunderstood lyrics is such a prevalent occurrence that it's been given its own name. They're called "mondegreens."

We'd like to hear about your personal mondegreens - whether they're songs from your past or present.

Send us a short description of the lyric you misheard, and how you found out what the actual lyrics were - if you ever did.

• E-mail dtianen@journalsentinel.comwith "mondegreens" as the subject.

• Or write to Dave Tianen, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, 333 W. State St., Milwaukee, WI 53203. Please include a daytime phone number. Deadline is Sept. 6.
