Kite Fly

Hi everybody.

After two days of flying kites, I'm tired, but had a good time.

I took very few pictures this year. Instead, I used the video function on my digital camera and took some video. Its not as nice as a real video camera, but its what I got.

The wind was too high Saturday and too unsteady Sunday to send my camera up on the kite so I didn't get any of those either.

Tonight, I worked on putting the clips I got together and made a video. This is 13 minutes of flying action and is a 33 megabyte file. Don't try to download this on dialup.

I would suggest saving it to your computer in case you want to watch it more than once, you won't have to download it again.

To save the file, right click on the link below and select "Save Target As" (Outlook Express) or "Save Link As" (FireFox) to save it to your computer. You should then be able to watch it in Windows Media Player as it is a WMV file.

The link to the video is HERE.

Yeah, that loud one was making that noise. Some are built that way on purpose. When they build them, they just leave the very last edge a little loose so it will flap and make that loud buzzing noise.

The spinning sock is neat too.

These are probably better to have videos web, they have so much motion to them, the photo's don't do a lot of them justice.

Oh, the "big" one is really not very loud. There is a really loud one later.

That first big one is eight individual kites "stacked" together. Those exact kiies are not made any more, but when they were available, they were $180 each. I'll let you do the math.

I already passed the really loud one I think, where he was saying he saw another guy that had 17 of them stacked.

That one moved so fast I'd be afraid it might come at me.

Very cool Web! Thanks for sharing it!

That last one with the streamer behind it almost looked like it had a jetstream.

The only one of those that was mine is the red "Flexi" with the 100' black tail at the end. I got Kevin to fly my kite for me so I could video at leas one of my own.

Looks like it was a perfect day for that! I would think the clouds in the sky are a good thing so you can get a good shot of the kites without the sun washing out the image.

It really was beautiful weather. It was about 70 degrees all day Saturday. With the higher winds, we were not able to do much with the "finess" kites. It was mainly the bigger, heavier built stuff.

I love the ones that get loud. At first I actually thought it was a jet flying over.

It seems most people either love or hate the noise.

I love the sound my red one there at the end makes. It makes a high-pitched whine noise as it cuts through the air. Its not very loud, but almost erie. I can't hear it when flying, but when you are under it you can hear it zing by.

Looks like it was a pretty big turnout. Are there ever any catastrophic accidents where someones kite bites the big one by crashing into the ground?

Oh, yeah, kites get broken all the time. Usually, it is just a broken spar. Most of the "sticks" in the kites are made of fiberglass in the cheaper ones and carbon fiber in the more expensive ones. You can get replacement pieces for broken ones.

The worst kind of crash is a broken spar that then tears a hole through the sail as it breaks. Then you have fabric to patch too.

The biggest concern when flying is safety. Those kites that fly really fast can really hurt if they hit you. Even bigger concern are the lines (strings). Most of the stunt kies fly on "Spectra" line which is VERY strong and VERY small. If you catch someone with a line of a fast moving kite, the line can then slide across the person and it will slice skin right open. We have to be extra careful especially where you have spectators running around that don't know enough to not walk right under your kite. We try to keep watch to make sure that no one gets hurt. I've not seen any major accidents yet. I did see a kid once that had a huge scar across his face from where he got cut by a line, but nothing ever at an event I was attending.

Just about made my mother-in-law sick. She was watching the kite video. She doesn't handle motion well and was getting dizzy watching the kites fly around. lol
