Only 44. But everyone will say the old cliche "He died doing what he loved". I always hated that saying. If he had the choice I'm sure he'd rather live to watch his son grow up!

Very sad news, I saw it on the news first thing this morning, he had two children and he got hit in the heart from what I have seen. It seems strange that it was a stingray tough, apprantely the last time someone was killed by one was in 1945! So this is a totally strange way for him to die, given the dangerous animals he normally deals with.

I have watched alot of his shows and have always loved how passionate is was about animals, it's a sad loss for the world.

This shouldn't have surprised me but it did. I guess I just became so used to him doing what he did that I always expected him to be ok. I really enjoyed watching him. This is just sad.

CAIRNS, Australia - Steve Irwin was videotaped pulling a poisonous stingray barb from his chest in his last moments of life, officials said Tuesday, as tributes poured in for TV's "Crocodile Hunter."

Police said there was nothing suspicious about Irwin's death and no evidence he provoked the animal. Irwin, 44, was stabbed through the heart on Monday while snorkeling with a stingray during filming of a new TV program on Australia's Great Barrier Reef.

John Stainton, Irwin's manager who was among the crew on the reef, said the fatal blow was caught on videotape, and described viewing the footage as having the "terrible" experience of watching a friend die.

"It shows that Steve came over the top of the ray and the tail came up, and spiked him here (in the chest), and he pulled it out and the next minute he's gone," Stainton told reporters in Cairns, where Irwin's body was taken for an autopsy.

Queensland state police were holding the tape as evidence for a coroner's inquiry _ a standard procedure in high-profile deaths or those caused by other than natural causes.

This is what wikipedia has about his death....

Shortly after 11:00 a.m. local time (01:00 UTC) on 4 September 2006, Irwin was fatally pierced in the chest by a short-tail stingray barb while snorkelling in Batt Reef, which is part of the Great Barrier Reef, off the coast of Port Douglas in Queensland, Australia. Irwin was in the area filming his own documentary, to be called The Ocean's Deadliest, but weather had stalled filming. Irwin decided to take the opportunity to film some shallow water shots for a segment in the television program his daughter Bindi was hosting,[29] when, according to his friend and colleague John Stainton, he swam too close to one of the animals. "He came on top of the stingray and the stingray's barb went up and into his chest and put a hole into his heart," said Stainton, who was on board Irwin's boat the Croc One.
The events were caught on camera, and the footage was handed to the Queensland Police.[30] After reviewing the footage of the incident and speaking to the cameraman who recorded it, marine documentary filmmaker and former spearfisherman Ben Cropp speculated that the stingray "felt threatened because Steve was alongside and there was the cameraman ahead." In such a case, the stingray responds by automatically flexing the serrated barb on its tail up to a maximum of 25 cm (10 in) of length. Cropp said Irwin had accidentally boxed the animal in. "It stopped and twisted and threw up its tail with the spike, and it caught him in the chest. It's a defensive thing. It's like being stabbed with a dirty dagger." The stinging of Irwin by the bull ray was "a one-in-a-million thing," Cropp told Time magazine. "I have swum with many rays, and I have only had one do that to me."[31] Some reports have claimed that after the incident, Irwin was shown on tape pulling the barb out, before losing consciousness, but this was denied by his colleague John Stainton. [32] It is thought, in the absence of a coroner's report, a combination of the toxins and the puncture wound from the barb caused Irwin to die of an apparent cardiac arrest[33] or that he died quickly as a result of a punctured aorta.[34]
Crew members aboard his boat called the emergency services in the nearest city of Cairns and administered CPR as they rushed the boat to nearby Lowe Isle to meet a rescue helicopter. Medical staff pronounced Irwin dead when they arrived a short time later.[29] According to Dr. Ed O'Loughlin, who treated Irwin, "it became clear fairly soon that he had non-survivable injuries." "He had a penetrating injury to the left front of his chest. He had lost his pulse and wasn't breathing."[35]
Irwin's body was flown to a morgue in Cairns. His wife was on a walking tour in Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park in Tasmania at the time, and returned via a private plane from Devonport to the Sunshine Coast with their two children.[29]
This was only the third known Australian fatality from a stingray, and the first since 1945.[36] As of 1996, only seventeen worldwide fatalities had been recorded,[37] and it is believed to be the only fatality from a stingray ever captured on film.[38]

Animal Planet was cashing in on it last night, It was Crocodile Hunter, but it was an episode of him in the sea. I think that is just tacky! I have seen this before, when certain people die they will air their True Hollywood Story on E and so on.

I've swam with stingrays before! The guide said basically just don't step on them and they won't mess with you. After all the crazy stuff he's done, it's surreal that he'd be killed doing something you'd think was totally safe.

I have heard that it quite a common thing to go swimming with them, I bet a lot less people will be doing it now!

Very sad.  I really liked the guy.  He was entertaining, and made learning about wildlife fun.  My best wishes go out to his family and friends.
