Arctic Monkeys won this year's annual Mercury Music Prize with their debut album Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not. Three of the founding members (minus original bassist Andy Nicholson who departed the group earlier this year), were awarded a prize of £20,000 last night (September 5th).
On receiving the award, vocalist Alex Turner said: "Somebody call 999, Richard Hawley's been robbed!", as Hawley had also been nomatinated for the prize.
Speaking further about the achievement, Turner added: "Thanks to everyone that's helped us. Normally it doesn't go to a band that's sold so many records, to put it bluntly, but we're pleased. They're good tunes, that's what we do and there aren't any tricks, people are trying to do too many tricks."
Arctic Monkeys managed to beat off the likes of Thom Yorke, Hot Chip, Muse and Guilletmots, to scoop the award.
