You all know about our station problems recently.

At about 8 PM tonight we'll be shutting down the computers to move some of them around and restore ALL of them.

There's going to be several other changes which I will let you know about as they occur, most will only affect people that have something directly to do with the station (JD, Web & Hartz).

I suspect we will DEFINATELY be down through Saturday, but it is entirely possible the outtage will interrupt the entire weekend.

I'll update this thread continuously through the weekend to keep you updated on the progress.

Alright, we're off the air and I'm gonna start backing some stuff up from the main computer to another one. This will take most of the night. It's a lot of data and it moves slow.

*** Update - 11:30 AM CT - 9/16 ***

Well folks, this is NOT looking good. I am pretty confident we will be off the air atleast until Monday at this point.

The restore discs don't work on the computer and I can't get it back up and running at all. At this point I believe I'm going to need to buy Windows again (which I don't know when I'll get around too) or replace the computer completely.

If I can't get things moving by Monday I may try to run the stream from my living room computer so we atleast have some music. But that's not set up for broadcasting so it would just be music, nothing else.

I'll continue to update you as things develop, but I'm going to be busy late this afternoon and evening so I know we won't get much accomplished after about 3 PM today.

Ok, I'm really running out of time here so I think I'm going to have to take a different plan of attack.

First thing tomorrow morning I'm going to focus all my attention on getting the computer in my living room ready to broadcast the stream. If I still don't have the main system configured and ready to roll by Friday JD & I could still do an old-school style broadcast from the living room Remember those days JD? One microphone, crappy sound? Might actually be fun.

It's not a convenient setup, and since I have so much other stuff running on here I don't know how reliable it would be. But if my problems are too major, it could be a long time before I can get around to replacing the stuff that needs replacing.

I'll update again tomorrow morning.

lol. You know, I'm really hoping to get the system up and running of course, but part of me is really thinking that WOULD be fun just for old times sake. And hell, we'd have a big screen TV to watch while the music's playin'!!!!

*** UPDATE - Sept. 17 - 11:28 AM ***

As of right now I have the computer in the living room set up to broadcast music and we are on the air with an 80's playlist again.

By the end of the evening I hope to have either the old fashioned request list back up and running or the one you're used to.

However, this broadcast is being generated from a system not well suited for it and I can not guarantee the reliability.

I do now believe it could be weeks, possibly longer before the old setup is completely back on line

JD, I'm guessing it may be the actual use of the requests. A lot of IP addresses flow through there all day and that might have made them nervous.

Am I right web? Or would it be something else? I know you mentioned possible security threats, but I don't really know what that means.

You mentioned that this was a lower cost host. Most of the time, it is simple business. If they are only charging a few dollars a month for hosting, the only way they can make a profit on each server, is to put A LOT of sites on each one.

To help sales, they offer HUGE amounts of storage and bandwidth which looks great to prospective clients. They sell more total service on the server than it can possibly provide. The problem is that if all these sites start actually using what they offer, the server can't handle it. Fortunately, for them, most sites use only a fraction of their allotment.

If they get a customer actually using close to what they offer you, then they wave the "abuse" flag and shut you down. They don't mind if you get mad and leave because they can then replace your one hosting income with 20 other sites that don't use what they offer.

This is a very common problem in the hosting industry.

What I meant by security, is if maybe there are security flaws in the request scripts that are putting their server at risk. Although this is possible, since they said "abuse" I suspect they shut it down because you were using what they offered.

I suspect this is the case, yes.

Its possible that the request scripts truely are pulling a lot of server resources, but I doubt it.

As of right now the cookout is still on Woo. If I don't have this at least SOMEWHAT fixed by Wednesday evening we'll have to think about it.

But I took the day off of work, so did JD, AND it's supposed to be the day we push the Cookbook so I hate to postpone it.

I'm fairly confident I can AT LEAST get us back on the air with microphones by then. The request system is the area where I have no idea how long it's going to take to get it going again.

UPDATE!!!

FINALLY a small breakthrough! I think I have the broadcast computer restored to it's original "brand-new" condition!

WOO HOOOOOOOO!!!

I've started transfering the music back into it, that will take about six hours. Then I can start trying to set it up to broadcast again. Odds just got a lot better that we'll be able to use it on Friday!
