Ruby's favorite songs thread

Well there are so many for me too, this is a neat idea JR!

This song has been one of my favorites- it has always helped me cope with death- especially my mom's- it is by Bette Midler!

Some say love, it is a river
that drowns the tender reed.
Some say love, it is a razor
that leaves your soul to bleed.
Some say love, it is a hunger,
an endless aching need.
I say love, it is a flower,
and you its only seed.

It's the heart afraid of breaking
that never learns to dance.
It's the dream afraid of waking
that never takes the chance.
It's the one who won't be taken,
who cannot seem to give,
and the soul afraid of dyin'
that never learns to live.

When the night has been too lonely
and the road has been to long,
and you think that love is only
for the lucky and the strong,
just remember in the winter
far beneath the bitter snows
lies the seed that with the sun's love
in the spring becomes the rose.

Then there is my favorite Pink Floyd song- Wish You Were Here. When I first moved here I left behind my first real love. He sent me a letter and told me he "wish you were here" and then wrote (great song)! He was right!

Wish You Were Here (Waters, Gilmour) 5:17

So, so you think you can tell
Heaven from Hell,
Blue skys from pain.
Can you tell a green field
From a cold steel rail?
A smile from a veil?
Do you think you can tell?

And did they get you to trade
Your heros for ghosts?
Hot ashes for trees?
Hot air for a cool breeze?
Cold comfort for change?
And did you exchange
A walk on part in the war
For a lead role in a cage?

How I wish, how I wish you were here.
We're just two lost souls
Swimming in a fish bowl,
Year after year,
Running over the same old ground.
What have we found?
The same old fears.
Wish you were here.

And my fave U2 song- Bad

Bad Lyrics
U2 Save up to 30%

Bad

If you twist and turn away
If you tear yourself in two again
If I could, yes I would
If I could, I would
Let it go
Surrender
Dislocate

If I could throw this
Lifeless lifeline to the wind
Leave this heart of clay
See you walk, walk away
Into the night
And through the rain
Into the half-light
And through the flame

If I could through myself
Set your spirit free
I'd lead your heart away
See you break, break away
Into the light
And to the day

To let it go
And so to fade away
To let it go
And so fade away

I'm wide awake
I'm wide awake
Wide awake
I'm not sleeping
Oh, no, no, no

If you should ask then maybe they'd
Tell you what I would say
True colors fly in blue and black
Bruised silken sky and burning flag
Colors crash, collide in blood shot eyes

If I could, you know I would
If I could, I would
Let it go...

This desperation
Dislocation
Separation
Condemnation
Revelation
In temptation
Isolation
Desolation
Let it go

And so fade away
To let it go
And so fade away
To let it go
And so to fade away

I'm wide awake
I'm wide awake
Wide awake
I'm not sleeping
Oh, no, no, no

Amen to Bad!

Ruby did you see the Live Aid performance of it when Bono jumped the guard rail and went into the crowd to dance? That had to be the coolest rock-n-roll moment ever!

This song by Hagar spells out what we know is true, but find it hard to accept when we hurting!

(S. Hagar)

You do what you want to do
I'll leave it all up to you
In time, I'll find love again
Hot love growin cold
Just when you thought you'd found a heart of gold
Looks like, I've been fooled again

Chorus:
Oh but it's all right, with me now
I'll get back up somehow
And with a little luck, I'm bound to win
And I'll fall in love again
I'll fall in love again

And you're always sittin ring side
Just a rollin' with the changing tide
The tide has washed you from my mind
And I guess you think you've got it made
Oh but then you never were afraid
12 CD's for the Price of 1
Of anything that you've left behind

[Chorus]

Yea, yea, yea
Yea, yea, yea, I'll fall in love again...

Here's something to compare it to
Like the little things you used to do
Like giving more than you take
Funny how the reasons grow
Then the very next things you know
The odds change, dividing up the cake

[Chorus]

Don't worry 'bout me baby
I'll along somehow
I'll fall in love again
Yes it's all right
Yes it's all right

Totally agree, especially with Wish You Were Here (anyone know, LS maybe, I'd assume this is Roger Waters again?), and I'll Fall In Love Again.

Ruby, Ruby, Ruby.

I am not a Bette Midler fan, although I liked her remake of "Beast Of Burden" (which probably makes JD's skin crawl ).

Despite the fact I don't like her I think THE ROSE is one of the greatest love songs ever from a lyrical standpoint. It allows for perfect pauses and reflection as it's being sung. Just perfect.

An EXCELLENT CALL! I won't put it on my list now that you've covered it, but I would probably add it at some point otherwise.

This song is so inspirational!

I Hope You Dance (Lee Ann Womack featuring Sons Of The Desert)
(Mark D. Sanders/Tia Sillers)

I hope you never lose your sense of wonder
You get your fill to eat
But always keep that hunger
May you never take one single breath for granted
God forbid love ever leave you empty handed
I hope you still feel small
When you stand by the ocean
Whenever one door closes, I hope one more opens
Promise me you'll give fate a fighting chance

And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance
I hope you dance
I hope you dance

I hope you never fear those mountains in the distance
Never settle for the path of least resistance
Living might mean taking chances
But they're worth taking
Lovin' might be a mistake
But it's worth making
Don't let some hell bent heart
Leave you bitter
When you come close to selling out
Reconsider
Give the heavens above
More than just a passing glance

And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance
I hope you dance
(Time is a wheel in constant motion always)
I hope you dance
(Rolling us along)
I hope you dance
(Tell me who)
I hope you dance
(Wants to look back on their years and wonder)
(Where those years have gone)

I hope you still feel small
When you stand by the ocean
Whenever one door closes, I hope one more opens
Promise me you'll give faith a fighting chance

And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance
Dance
I hope you dance
I hope you dance
(Time is a wheel in constant motion always)
I hope you dance
(Rolling us along)
I hope you dance
(Tell me who)
(Wants to look back on their years and wonder)
I hope you dance
(Where those years have gone)

(Tell me who)
I hope you dance
(Wants to look back on their years and wonder)
(Where those years have gone)

Most of you have never heard this song, but I love Will Hoge and this is my song for little E!

May the sunlight find your face
Even when the rain does fall
And get back on your feet again
Every time you slip and fall
Keep your heart wide open
And always taking in
And even when it's broken
Be strong enough to fix it up again

Oh little baby girl
Sweet little baby girl
I wish I could hold your hand in this great big world
Oh little baby girl

And I hope your hands are steady
And never need to make a fist
And I hope that when you're ready
You get one never ending kiss
And I hope that deep inside of you
There's a sweet eternal song
And I hope the words are pretty
And that you'll always sing along

And I hope your friends are many
And your laughter's always loud
To help you when you're lonely
And pick you up when you're down
I hope your eyes shine bright love
And learn to see the light
Take the time to listen
Decide yourself what's wrong or right

Oh little baby girl
Sweet little baby girl
Be strong in this great big world
Oh little baby girl

I like this song- it hit home when my hubby first started having problems and I felt like this song spoke to him! Faith Hill's

Baby tell me where'd you ever learn
To fight without sayin' a word
Then waltz back into my life
Like it's all gonna be alright
Don't you know how much it hurts

When we don't talk
When we don't touch
When it doesn't feel like we're even in love
It matters to me
When I don't know what to say
Don't know what to do
Don't know if it really even matters to you
How can I make you see
It matters to me

Maybe I still don't understand
The distance between a woman and a man
So tell me how far it is
And how you can love like this
'cause I'm not sure I can

When we don't talk
When we don't touch
When it doesn't feel like we're even in love
It matters to me
When I don't know what to say
Don't know what to do
Don't know if it really even matters to you
How can I make you see
It matters to me

The last time I was with the boy's dad was on a fourth of July. It was the last time I allowed him to beat me- this song fits so perfectly!

Martina McBride's

Independence Day

Well she seemed alright by dawns early light
Though she looked a little worried and weak
She tried to pretend she wasn't drinkin' again
But daddy left the proof on her cheek
And I was only eight years old that summer
And I always seemed to be in the way
So I took myself down to the fair in town
On Independence Day

Well word gets around in a small, small town
They said he was a dangerous man
Mama was proud and she stood her ground
But she knew she was on the losin' end
Some folks whispered and some folks talked
But everybody looked the other way
And when time ran out there was no one about
On Independence Day

(CHORUS)
Let freedom ring, Let the white dove sing
Let the whole world know that today is a day of reckoning
Let the weak be strong, let the right be wrong
Roll the stone away, let the guilty pay
It's Independence Day

Well she lit up the sky that fourth of July
By the time that the firemen come
They just put out the flames, and took down some names
And sent me to the county home
Now I ain't sayin' it's right or it's wrong
But maybe its the only way
Talk about your revolution
It's Independence Day

(REPEAT CHORUS)

Roll the stone away
It's Independence day

Along those lines- this song works too!

 Dixie Chicks

Mary Ann and Wanda were the best of friends
All through their high school days
Both members of the 4H club
Both active in the FFA
After graduation Mary Ann went out lookin' for a bright new world
Wanda looked all around this town and all she found was Earl

Well it wasn't two weeks after she got married that
Wanda started gettin' abused
She put on dark glasses and long sleeve blouses
And make-up to cover a bruise
Well she finally got the nerve to file for divorce
She let the law take it from there
But Earl walked right through that restraining order
And put her in intensive care

Right away Mary Ann flew in from Atlanta
On a red eye midnight flight
She held Wanda's hand and they worked out a plan
And it didn't take them long to decide

That Earl had to die
Goodbye Earl
those black-eyed peas
They tasted alright to me
Earl, you feelin' weak?
Why don't you lay down and sleep
Earl ain't it dark
Wrapped up in that tarp Earl

The cops came by to bring Earl in
They searched the house high and low
Then they tipped their hats and said 'thank
you ladies if you hear from him let us know'

Well the weeks went by and
Spring turned to summer
And summer faded into fall
And it turns out he was a missing
person who nobody missed at all

So the girls bought some land and a roadside stand
Out on highway 109
They sell Tennessee ham and strawberry jam
And they don't lose any sleep at night 'cause

Earl had to die
Goodbye Earl
We need a break
Let's go out to the lake Earl
We'll pack a lunch
And stuff you in the trunk Earl
Well is that all right
Good let's go for a ride
Earl hey
Well hey, hey, hey
Aw, hey, hey, hey
Well, hey, hey, hey

This song is too sweet!

It's a little bit funny this feeling inside
I'm not one of those who can easily hide
I don't have much money but boy if I did
I'd buy a big house where we both could live

If I was a sculptor, but then again, no
Or a man who makes potions in a travelling show
I know it's not much but it's the best I can do
My gift is my song and this one's for you

And you can tell everybody this is your song
It may be quite simple but now that it's done
I hope you don't mind
I hope you don't mind that I put down in words
How wonderful life is while you're in the world

I sat on the roof and kicked off the moss
Well a few of the verses well they've got me quite cross
But the sun's been quite kind while I wrote this song
It's for people like you that keep it turned on

So excuse me forgetting but these things I do
You see I've forgotten if they're green or they're blue
Anyway the thing is what I really mean
Yours are the sweetest eyes I've ever seen

This song reminds me of my first love-

When You Close Your Eyes - Night Ranger

What do you do when it's falling apart
And you knew it was going from the very start
Do you close your eyes...and dream about me?

A girl in love with a gleam in your eye
I was a younger boy....all dressed in white
We're older now....but do you still think about me?

I remember we learned about love in the back of a Chevrolet
It felt so good to be young......feels like yesterday.....

CHORUS:
When you close your eyes.....Do you dream (dream) about me?
When you close your eyes.....Do you dream about me?
Do you still dream about me?

I guess I don't know what I'm thinkin'
Comin' off a hard night of drinkin'
Angie come closer to me, I need a soul to bleed on..

Well it coulda been done in a different kind of way
But that ain't you, you play tough when you play
It's over now.....but do you still think about me?

I remember I held you so tight and we danced the night away
With the moves of two wide-eyed kids...I need you so much today....

CHORUS

I remember we learned about love in the back of a Chevrolet
No good for an old memory to mean so much today

CHORUS

This is the other little E song=

FOREVER YOUNG
(R. Stewart/J.Cregan/K.Savigar)

May the good Lord be with you
Down every road you roam
And may sunshine and happiness
surround you when you're far from home
And may you grow to be proud
Dignified and true
And do unto others
As you'd have done to you
Be courageous and be brave
And in my heart you'll always stay
Forever Young, Forever Young
Forever Young, Forever Young

May good fortune be with you
May your guiding light be strong
Build a stairway to heaven
with a prince or a vagabond

And may you never love in vain
and in my heart you will remain
Forever Young,  Forever Young
Forever Young, Forever Young
Forever Young
Forever Young

And when you finally fly away
I'll be hoping that I served you well
For all the wisdom of a lifetime
No one can ever tell

But whatever road you choose
I'm right behind you, win or lose
Forever Young, Forever Young
Forever Young ,Forever Young
Forever Young, Forever Young
For, Forever Young, Forever Young

I like this song- it hits home here lately- Depeche Mode

People are people
So why should it be
You and I should get along so awfully

So we're different colours
And we're different creeds
And different people have different needs
It's obvious you hate me
Though I've done nothing wrong
I've never even met you so what could I have done

I can't understand
What makes a man
Hate another man
Help me understand

Help me understand

Now you're punching
And you're kicking
And you're shouting at me
I'm relying on your common decency
So far it hasn't surfaced
But I'm sure it exists
It just takes a while to travel
From your head to your fists

FYI - "The Rose" was written by Amanda McBroom.  I looked that up when I was a kid, because I had to know who wrote such an amazing song!

And I looooove Mick in the video for "Beast of Burden."  (Plus I think she did a good job with it in general.)

It's something practically everyone can relate to.  I don't like kids, but man, that's just perfect.  The first time I heard it, I was blown away.  And I'm not at all surprised that it became a cross-over pop hit, because of that.

The line about choice in this song makes such a strong statement about our society- I love Rush!

There are those who think that life has nothing left to chance
A host of holy horrors to direct our aimless dance

A planet of play things
We dance on the strings
Of powers we cannot perceive
'The stars aren't aligned
Or the gods are malign...'
Blame is better to give than receive

[Chorus:]
You can choose a ready guide in some celestial voice
If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice
You can choose from phantom fears and kindness that can kill
I will choose a path that's clear
I will choose freewill

There are those who think
That they were dealt a losing hand
The cards were stacked against them
They weren't born in Lotusland

All preordained
A prisoner in chains
A victim of venomous fate
Kicked in the face
You can't pray for a place
In heaven's unearthly estate

[Chorus]

Each of us
A cell of awareness
Imperfect and incomplete
Genetic blends
With uncertain ends
On a fortune hunt that's far too fleet

Oh and Boston I love this song and its meaning too!

Peace Of Mind Lyrics
Boston Save up to 30%

Peace of Mind
Boston

Now if you're feelin' kinda low 'bout the dues you've been paying
Future's coming much too slow
And you wanna run but somehow you just keep on stayin'
Can't decide on which way to go
Yeah, yeah, yeah
I understand about indecision
But I don't care if I get behind
People livin' in competition
All I want is to have my peace of mind.
Now you're climbin' to the top of the company ladder
Hope it doesn't take too long
Can'tcha you see there'll come a day when it won't matter
Come a day when you'll be gone
I understand about indecision
But I don't care if I get behind
People li vin' in competition
All I want is to have my peace of mind.
Take a look ahead, take a look ahead, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah...
Now everybody's got advice they just keep on givin'
Doesn't mean too much to me
Lot's of people out to make-believe they're livin'
Can't decide who they should be.
I understand about indecision
But I don't care if I get behind
People li vin' in competition
All I want is to have my peace of mind.
Take a look ahead, take a look ahead. Look ahead.

And this song has been such a life anthem for me- Whitesnake

I don't know where I'm goin
but I sure know where I've been
hanging on the promises in songs of yesterday.
An' I've made up my mind, I ain't wasting no more time
but here I go again, here I go again.

Tho' I keep searching for an answer
I never seem to find what I'm looking for.
Oh Lord, I pray you give me strength to carry on
'cos I know what it means to walk along the lonely street of dreams.

Here I go again on my own
goin' down the only road I've ever known.
Like a drifter I was born to walk alone.
An' I've made up my mind, I ain't wasting no more time.

Just another heart in need of rescue
waiting on love's sweet charity
an' I'm gonna hold on for the rest of my days
'cos I know what it means to walk along the lonely street of dreams.

Here I go again on my own
goin' down the only road I've ever known.
Like a hobo I was born to walk alone.
An' I've made up my mind, I ain't wasting no more time
but here I go again, here I go again,
here I go again, here I go.

An' I've made up my mind, I ain't wasting no more time.

Here I go again on my own
goin' down the only road I've ever known.
Like a drifter I was born to walk alone
'cos I know what it means to walk along the lonely street of dreams.

Here I go again on my own
goin' down the only road I've ever known.
Like a drifter I was born to walk alone.
An' I've made up my mind, I ain't wasting no more time
but here I go again, here I go again,
here I go again, here I go,
