I told you guys awhile back that my dad got himself, me, my older sister and her husband tickets to see The Rolling Stones.
I saw my first Stones concert on Friday night and I must say it was a total event. It was the first time a major band has ever played a concert at Churchill Downs (best known for the Kentucky Derby), but what a great idea for a first band to play there. I have never been an ardent Stones fan, but I have always been a fan of their 70's and early 80's material, and even like some of the latter stuff, Some Girls and Tattoo You are my favorite albums of theirs if that says anything. Alice Cooper opened up and his set was okay, but a little disappointing considering what people have said about his shows. As an opening act, there were no theatrics, just a rundown of his biggest hits (but only the rockers, none of his ballads like I Never Cry, Only Women Bleed, etc...) and some of his new songs. I had fun but wasn't awestruck. However, when the Stones came on, there was just such an intensity in the air. The seats we had were terrible but even seemingly being a mile away, there is just a captivating feel when Mick, Keith, Ronnie and Charlie took to the stage opening with "Jumpin' Jack Flash". The ONLY disappointment I had was that they only did three post-1974 tracks (Miss You, Little T&A and Start Me Up) outside of the obligatory A Bigger Bang songs, I would've loved She's So Cold, Beast Of Burden, Mixed Emotions, You Got Me Rockin', etc... but at the same time, they absolutely kicked everyones ass and played nonstop for two hours.
I never realized how much I admire Mick Jagger until I saw him live, the man is 63 years old and he moves around on stage as if he was 23. Most guys his age are aiming for retirement and here he is still active and hyper as he was forty years ago. It rained hard for the first hour (I didn't get hit much from where we were standing) of the concert but it finally quit around the time Keith had his turn on the spotlight for You Take The Silver and Little T&A.
While there are bands I like better than The Stones, I don't think I've ever experienced such an event as I did seeing these guys.
