Let's Remodel A Bathroom!

Its time.

I'm starting the bathroom remodel tomorrow. I will not be on here as much for a few days because I gotta push this to get it usable again.

We have a plumber coming at 8:30 tomorrow (Friday) to disconnect everything and cap the lines off (nothing has shutoffs now). When he's done, I'll start demolition and everything will go. Going to bust out the lath and plaster and start over with everyting new.

Here are some "before" shots. I'm almost embarrased to show these because this this room is so bad. After this, we just have the living room left and then everything will have been spruced up on the main floor.

Today, it looked like this:

Fabulous 1960's wallboard. I started to pull that off one day thinking that it might look beter without that and there is even worse looking brown wallboard behind the white stars.

The faucet is leaking a little and has caused the board to deteriorate around the tub. It looks like mold, but it is that dark "Masonite" stuff falling apart.

It is a really small room.

Our wonderful light fixture. The origional must have gone bad at some time so they put a smaller flourescent fixture inside the origional one. It was shorter so the ends are filled with pieces of cardboard and covered with contact paper. The light is wired in the wall with lamp cord. The only single outlet in the batroom is in the other end of this light.

I'm hoping to get this room completely gutted tomorrow. The window will be filled in because we are going to make it a shower now too. Now, we just have a single stall shower in the basement.

We do have a toilet, sink, and the shower in the basement so we won't be without facilities, but I'll need to get this working again ASAP. My wife hates the basement.

Let the demo begin!

Good luck Web! I just helped my folks redo their bathroom about a month ago, new tub surround, tiles, paint, fixtures the works. The ugly brown behind the panel board is probably glue. We found since the brown glue was hard you can glue right over it without sanding it and making an awful mess. I highly recommend using the PL brand tub surround adhesive kit.

I like the existing tile, though! That looks fairly new.

Don't feel bad Web! Your bathroom in it's current state looks better than mine! I thought that we were at least going to paint over the hideous thing that is in there now, but we still haven't done it. But we are only renting.

The "tile" on the floor is actually just carpet. It's gone now.

I am wiped out. I made good progress though. The room is completely gutted out. All the fixtures are out and the lath and plaster is in a pile outside under the window.

The plumber was two hours late but it worked out well. I started working and had enough plaster out that the tub was free. So, I made the plumber help me get the old cast iron tub out. He guessed it weighs about 350 lbs. We got it out of the bathroom then I had a cart that we strapped it to and rolled it outside. He is going to come back and take the tub and sink for his cast iron collection to take to a reclycler some day.

One good thing, we were considering rearranging the toilet and sink. When we had the plumber come look at it when we were planning, it was going to be more work (cost) to move the drain lines than it was worth. Today, after he looked again, he decided it won't be bad if I can cut one cast iron drain pipe. It will be about an hour of hacking at it with a sawzall and abrasive blades. We think it will be better this way since the room is so small.

The room is cleaned to the studs now (other than pulling about 1,000 little lath nails), but it was almost dark when I got done. With only a portable work light, I didn't think I'd get much for pictures so here's a couple from this afternoon "in progress" of getting the old out.

The far wall is where the tub was. That 2x4 on the wall is what was supporting the side of the tub.

In this picture, you can see a couple of burned boards. That is an outside wall to the garage. I've found boards like that all over the house in different locations. There must have been a special deal on burned wood when they built this old house. Over in the right, you can see the brown stuff that was behind the white board. That is actually like a linoleum type stuff. It actually made it easier to demo as it helped hold the plaster together so it came out in bigger sheets rather than breaking up into little pieces.

There was no insulation in the outside walls. I put some over the ceiling after we bought the house. Get it all insulated and that room should feel much warmer this winter.

Tomorrow, the plan is to work on getting the floor underlayment in and a little stub wall to fill in the 6" between the end of the tub and the other wall. Once those two things are done, the plumber can come back and rough in the new pipes.

Wow! When you mean a remodel you mean a REMODEL!!

Maybe the burned wood came from the previous owner lighting a match too close to the toilet....

I can't get away with that. This will be the fourth room here we've done this way. She knows I can do it. I actually "owe" her anyway. Remodeling the bathroom was the deal with me getting the new bass I wanted when I wanted it. I'm fufilling my contract.

I think Web should add a few suprises to this new restroom.

Let's start with a High Definition Plasma 27" TV flush in the wall facing the toilet, so he can watch the Huskers games from the throne.

Anyone else got anything to add to the wishlist for Web's new bathroom?

I have to admit that I'm excited about this project too. It will be nice to not have to go to the basement to shower. I don't need a TV in the bathroom, I have a wireless laptop.

Hey Web, set up a webcam and we could webcast it and call it PIMP MY BATHROOM!

But if you don't shower in the basement where will the centipedes and spiders go to wash up?

And web, when adding toys to the house, it's NOT about what you NEED! It's about what you WANT!

if we only had the things we need we'd all have a loin-cloth, a jug of water and a dead animal carcass in our cave!

What do you WANT man? What crazy bathroom addition to you WANT! This is your chance!

That wouldn't exactly be "must see tv". I'm too slow . . . the TV pro's could do this in an hour . . . including commercials. I will be at this for at least a couple weeks.

Even better! We can have two windows open, one showing you remodeling and the other a wall with paint drying on it! We can stretch it out and make millions!

That might bring in the viewers in Nebraska, but the big markets need more action

How about this . . . the "remote web flush".

We could point the cam straight down toward the toilet. Then, we could set up a web site with at "Flush" button. You press the button and can watch the toilet flush.

Then, we can set up a PayPal link for donations to help pay for our water bill. NOW we're getting somewhere!
