WHEATON, Ill. New electronic monitoring anklets to be used by the DuPage County State's Attorney's Office have a nose for booze.
The anklets are part of a pilot program to monitor the alcohol consumption of people arrested for alcohol-related offenses.

The system, nicknamed SCRAM, for Secure Continuous Remote Alcohol Monitoring, includes the anklet, a modem and a Web site.

Accused offenders will wear the anklets, which can measure the amount of ethanol in their sweat and tell whether they've consumed alcohol.

The results of the monitoring are then transmitted via modem to a Web site accessed by monitoring personnel.

DuPage County State's Attorney Joe Birkett says he would like judges to start using the SCRAM system as a condition of bond, probation or supervision.
