Firefox

Ok I'm sure you guys all talked about this before, but what is the difference between that and IE ? I am lost.

The main thing is that it does not run the scripting things that allow all the spyware, trojans, and viruses onto your computer . . . short answer: it is simply safer to use.

IE7 now has tabbed browsing too, but that alone for me was worth using Firefox. I love the tabbed browsing.

I remember that I just heard in a podcast that Firefox now offers spell checking in forms. I had to look a bit to figure it out, but I found it.

All you have to do is right click on a form box, like while entering a post here in the forum, and enable the spell checking and it will underline misspeailed (like that one) words.

When it underlines a word, you then can right click on the word for spelling options or you can add the word to the dictionary. Very COOL for things like this, web mail services, etc!

Oh, and Woo . . . toolbars . . . they scare me because you don't know how much of your personal information, surfing habits etc. they might be sending back to the tool bar headquarters.

You don't have to be one OR the other. You can install Firefox and still have IE available for those that need it.

No, they won't conflict, but one of them has to be the "default" browser. The first time you run Firefox, it will ask you if you want it to be the default. The default browser is the one that will load, if you don't have a browser open and click a link in an email or something.

You can let it select Firefox as the default, or you can tell it to not be the default and also not ask you again about it.

I have a hard time working in IE when I need to now (like with stupid companies like Kintera that don't make their tools Firefox compatible). I get so used to having all the features in Firefox that I forget that IE doesn't have them.

Like tabbed browsing.
And the ability to customize where your buttons and search boxes and such are.
And my weather add on.
And the quick bookmarks.
And, and, and...

Though Web, have you checked out FireFTP? An in-browser ftp program. I just downloaded it and am going to try it out for a while.

That's another difference I take for granted. Firefox remembers my logins so much better than IE does.

i think that I will just open IE if I need to see our home page. Otherwise I gotta ask the boss what the username and password is then there will be questions.

No, I haven't tried that one yet . . . I'll have to.

I have the Chatzilla IRC program, its cool too.

Firefox (and most others) actually conform to the http coding standards. IE before version 7 did not. I heard that IE7 now (finally) decided to play the game and conform to standards. All the sites that were designed specifically for IE 6 and older are now a mess in IE 7.

This is exactly what grates on my nerves about Microsoft. They do not want to conform to standards. Its "our way or no way". IE is one example. The FrontPage web design software does not put out standard html code. We have to provide "extensions" on the server to make pages built with FronPage work correctly. The PDF thing we talked about the other day.

The community is working an "open document format" to make it easier for people to exchange information between systems, and even operating systems like Linux, Mac & Windows. Open Office moved to the format as are many others. Microsoft said it was not technically possible to make MS Office do the open document format. Two guys sat down in one afternoon and wrote a conversion program that will do it. The simple fact is that Microsoft DOESN'T WANT to play with anyone that does not pay them huge amounts of money to use their computers.

So, I will admit that part of the reason I like Firefox so much . . . its not from Microsoft and it works better than theirs.

I like the Forecastfox plugin. It keeps the current weather in the lower right corner of the browser all the time.

Right now, its 44°.

One setting I always change when I install a new copy of Firefox, is under Tools -> Options -> Tabs, I check the box that says:
When I open a link to a new tab, switch to it immediately

To quickly open a link in a new tab, hold the ctrl key as you click the link, or you can right click on the link and select "Open in New Tab". Also, if you need a new tab to surf in, you can hit "Ctrl - t" and that will give you an empty shiny new one to do with as you please.

I've never tried opening my player in Firefox, I usually just open mine by itself. In fact, I even gave it its own Quick Launch button.

I also have the VIP player, but I don't think that makes a difference. You should be able to open it on your system by going to your Program Files and the Live 365 folder.

It looks like the version 2 upgrade changed some file associations.

If I open the live365 player it plays with no problems. If I close it and then go to the Live365 home page and click on a station, mine is asking me what program to use to play the music with.

You should be able to go to Tools -> Options -> Content Tab -> then at the bottom "Manage" File types, that will tell Firefox how to open those links. Mine shows and entry for:
365E - Live365.com Station
Then I can "Change Action" and select my live365 player as the application to open on those links.
