Stupid criminal!

They all are, but this one takes the cake!

'He was as surprised as I was'
'He was as surprised as I was'
It was hard to know who was more surprised -- the store robber or the police officer standing behind him when it happened.

The holdup of a Shreveport gas station-convenience store was thwarted late Monday night by a member of a police armed robbery task force -- who had stopped by on a routine check and was unnoticed when the would-be bandit walked in to rob the place.

"He said, 'I picked the wrong place,'" Agent L.J. Scott said of the suspect's reaction after being arrested. "I said, 'Yes, you picked the wrong place.'"

It happened about 11:20 p.m. at the Valero gas station in the 8800 block of Jewella Avenue in southwest Shreveport.

Scott -- wearing a shirt marked "Shreveport Police" on the front and back and "Police" on the sleeves -- was standing in a candy aisle of the store when a man wearing a mask and a hunting glove walked in.

"I could hear him say, 'Give it up; give it up,'" Scott said. "He was looking directly at the clerk."

The robber obviously didn't take close notice of Scott, who was about 10 feet from the counter.

"At first, I thought it was a joke -- that a person would come in and rob the place with a Shreveport police officer in the aisle," Scott said. "I think he was as surprised as I was. He looked like a deer caught in the headlights."

Scott arrested the man and confiscated a .32-caliber handgun.

Booked on charges of armed robbery was Derek Pierson Jr. 21, of Stockton, Calif.

Police said Pierson told them he was passing through town and needed money to get home. He could be looking at up to 104 years in a Louisiana prison.

Woman calls police, says someone had tampered with her marijuana

She turns over stash and is issued ticket for possession

OAK PARK -- Marijuana users seldom call police to check whether their drugs contains added chemicals, but one Oak Park woman did exactly that, police said.

The woman, who lives in the 21000 block of Beverly, initially called police to report a suspicious circumstance at her house, police said.

"When our officers got to the house she told them she believed the marijuana she had been smoking was laced with something other than marijuana," said Oak Park Public Safety Lt. Mike Pousak.

The woman, 38, told police Thursday she had gotten the marijuana from her boyfriend. The boyfriend was not at the house at the time when police arrived about 9 p.m., Pousak said.

Officers also spoke to the woman's daughter.

"The daughter told them her mother had been acting erratic for the last couple of weeks," Pousak said.

The woman apparently began to believe that there were demons in the house, he added.

Police then asked the woman if she had any of the marijuana left. She gave it to them and was issued a ticket for misdemeanor possession of marijuana, Pousak said. The woman turned over less than a gram of the suspected marijuana to police. A preliminary field test resulted in a positive reading for marijuana, Pousak said. The substance will be sent to the state police lab for further testing.

The woman was taken to an area hospital to be checked out, Pousak said.

Police would not release the woman's name, but said she will have to appear in Oak Park 45B District Court at 1 p.m. Dec. 6 for a hearing on the ticket for marijuana possession. The misdemeanor charge carries a maximum penalty of 93 days in jail and a $500 fine.

Asked if it is a good idea for illegal drug users to ask police to check out the purity of their prohibited products, Pousak said, "Not unless they want to be (criminally) charged."

By EDWARD LEWIS elewis@timesleader.com

WILKES-BARRE - A husband suffered severe burns to his chest and face when his wife threw boiling hot water on him while he slept early Tuesday morning, police said.

Jean Schmidt, 63, of 129 N. Meade St., admitted to police she boiled water and threw it at her husband, Michael, because she felt he was tampering with the hot water heater.

Michael Schmidt was flown to Lehigh Valley Hospital’s burn unit for severe burns to his face, chest and arms, police said.

Jean Schmidt remains jailed at the Luzerne County Correctional Facility for lack of $2,500 bail. She was charged with aggravated assault and recklessly endangering another person, according to arrest papers.
