Treat Me Right From The Start & I won't threaten to LEAVE!

GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!

I knew it would happen. Finally fed up with my cellular phone company I called ready to just give up on cell phones.

I told the Verizon rep I was going to switch the Sprint (A lie, I was just going to go phoneless) because of their "fair and flexible" plan. I told him how I'm sick of overage charges, and this month was the worst. I told him I'm tired of my "contract" resetting to 2 years every time I make a change to my plan, which I HAVE to do because my needs keep changing.

Well MY OH MY, did I get the red carpet rolled out. They can't offer the same plan as Sprint, but they dropped this months overage charges, gave me a free month of a higher plan, DIDN'T reset my contract date for doing this and told me I can have a brand new phone for free! And not a crappy one! It's a very nice $250 phone on their website that they offer to new customers for $150.

I agreed to stick with it for a little longer, but it ticks me off you ALWAYS gotta threaten to leave before companies treat you like you have any value.

Cable & Phone are like that. Call and tell them you're cancelling your DSL or Cable Broadband, you won't BELEIVE the deal they'll give you.

Last year I did that for both services, the cable went from $49.95 to $34.95 (and I've been told they actually now will drop it to $14.95 so I'll be calling again).

The DSL dropped from $49.99 a month to $19.95 when I said I wanted out.

GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!

I might have to try that with aol. $55 a month for cable modem; why wouldn't I go with like one of these $19.99 a month high speed plans?

Try it with your credit cards too! I have one card with a lifetime locked in rate of 3.99%

It's the squeaky wheel mentality - and you're right, it's a shame people have to resort to that.

I have to change credit cards.

Our main card has always been due from the 20th to the 24th of the month. I pay it online and as long as you submit the payement on or before the day it's due, theres no late fee.

For some reason, last month, they decided to bump my payment due date up to the 15th. I didn't even open the bill until the 19th and then realized it was late. Because I have been very good about paying on time and paying it off every month for quite a while, I'm fully convinced this was only to try to catch us off guard so they could nail us with a $30 late fee.

I called them and gave them every opportunity to remove the late fee but they wouldn't. The lady even went back several months and confirmed that the due date has always been after the 20th and that there was no apparent reason why it got bumped up.

Because they wouldn't take the charge off, I will close this one when it's paid off again. I know when I call to close it, they will send me to one of those "save the business" specialists who have the selling skills and authority to offer you better deals. At that time, I will be happy to explain why I'm closing the account, that I gave them a chance to fix the issue but since they didn't then, they have one less customer.

I did the same Web. I got an offer in the mail for the 3.99 card. We had two cards with balances. I gave them every chance to change my rate and neither one would. But when I sent payment in full, the calls started.

But they can kiss my hiney and I told them!

I'm doing that with SBC right now. I hate SBC with a passion and left for Sage Telecom a year ago. Since then they've been sending me these Please Come Back deals, but the reason I originally left them was because of their shoddy customer service, not the price. Well, now SBC is offering DSL at $19.99 and Sage doesn't offer DSL. So I called SBC, and they'll actually give me the DSL for $14.99, but I have to switch my phone service back over then too (but it will be cheaper), and I'm locked into a one year contract, but the offer is good for the whole year. I haven't been able to sacrifice the excellent customer service I get from Sage yet, but I'm sure I'll swithc over soon, just for the DSL. I figure if they try to up the price on me when my year is over, by that time Sage or someone else will have DSL, and I can just switch to someone else and keep playing them back and forth to get the better deal. If they want to play me like that, I'll play them like that.

Molly,

When the year is up and they try to raise the price, you just play the same game again.

Clark Howard was talking about this about a month ago. He had the same thing with the cable (in fact, it's where I got the idea to call SBC) and he asked what happens after a year. They said it goes back to the lower rate, but just call again and we'll give you another year.

It's just a game they're playing. All the hardware and software is there already. They could be charging you $5 and making a profit, but they figure if they can slide the price up without you leaving they might as well do it.

WebGuy - another thing you can do is instead of waiting until it's paid off, roll it over into another card right now if you don't mind opening another account. When that same thing happened to me, I immediately rolled the amount to a new card with a 0% APR for the next 12 months. In addition, as soon as the previous card's balance was zero, I called to cancel citing the incident. They immediately reimbursed the late fee with my assurance I'd keep the account open. Then I waited six months not using the card and THEN cancelled.
